Former Associate Dean of Students and University Ombudsman James E. Harris ’68, ’70 MA provided 42 years of dedicated service to Montclair State and its students. He established the\u00a0James E. Harris Book Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0to provide highly deserving undergraduate students financial support for the purchase of books.<\/p>\n

Throughout his tenure, James served countless students and led various organizations at the University. His passion for education and student success is immeasurable. When asked what motivated the start of the scholarship fund he said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe book fund is consistent with ÌÇÐÄvlog\u2019s history of providing and supporting educational opportunities for a diverse group of highly intelligent, highly motivated students who understand that education is the key that opens doors to many opportunities. Education is very important to personal development as well as access to employment and financial security.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

James has made a tremendous impact on many students who have graduated from Montclair State in both their personal and professional lives.<\/p>\n

Alumna Audrey Washington \u201887 reflected on the profound impact he had on her and fellow graduates. \u201cWe all remember Dean Harris fondly and so many alumni talk about how much he impacted the lives of Montclair State students but especially the Black Student Union students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Audrey and fellow alumni, Lauren (Chambliss) Hernandez \u201887, Antonio Henson \u201886 and Darryl Marshall \u201887 organized a virtual Montclair State Black Student Union alumni reunion for more than 30 alumni on January 9. In just two days, the group of reunited alumni raised more than $2,000 for the\u00a0James E. Harris Book Scholarship<\/a>. \u201cWe were happy to support this fundraising campaign in his honor and hope that our donations help future Montclair State alumni,\u201d said Audrey.<\/p>\n
