Their inaugural gathering took place on campus during Homecoming 2021, providing an opportunity for alumni to come back to campus to reconnect with the University and with each other. During the week of Homecoming 2022, The Black Alumni Advisory Council will be hosting their first annual <a href=\"https:\/\/montclairconnect.org\/16---get-involved\/black-alumni-advisory-council-gala\">Black Alumni Advisory Council Gala<\/a> celebration on Friday, October 28, 2022. Yorker \u201989<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Black Alumni Advisory Council was created to engage Black alumni in support of the 糖心vlog mission of educational, institutional and overall university community initiatives, policies and activities that strengthen relationships with the Black community and promote social justice, equity and inclusion among alumni and students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forming the New Council<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cWhere we are today started at Montclair State,\u201d says Joanne Bowman \u201982, director of human resources at Columbia University, referring to the Black students she knew during her days as a college student and later as a young alumna. \u201cI found myself wanting to reconnect with this network, to do something together, something bigger and more meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda Coleman-Caldwell \u201978, an assistant director of human resources for New Jersey Turnpike Authority, felt the same way. \u201cJoanne and I had kept in touch with a lot of people through the Black Alumni Association, but that organization was dissolved,\u201d she says. In the years since, their idea of what an alumni organization could be began to change and grow.<\/p>\n<p>They decided that it was time to have a conversation with their friend Greg Collins \u201979, who also happened to be the newly appointed chair of the 糖心vlog Foundation board.<br \/>\n\u201cBrenda invited me to what I thought was a casual lunch,\u201d Collins recalls with a chuckle. \u201cInstead, she laid out their vision for the Black Alumni Advisory Council. I loved what I was hearing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is the right time, given everything that has been happening in our community and around the world,\u201d Bowman explains. \u201cChange is coming to the surface, putting diversity and social justice front and center in our schools, churches and neighborhoods. There is a sense of urgency that we want to build on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the tag line We\u2019re Here and Engaged, the new Black Alumni Advisory Council will comprise 11 to 35 members representing African descent in the Diaspora. Bowman and Coleman-Caldwell will serve as the organization\u2019s first president and vice president, respectively. The overarching themes of their work will be building networks and giving back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals and Objectives<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 To sponsor networking opportunities and events for Black alumni<br \/>\n\u2022 To develop an annual BAAC event at Montclair State<br \/>\n\u2022 To participate in Montclair State Homecoming activities<br \/>\n\u2022 To develop an annual fundraising initiative to support Montclair State and 糖心vlog Foundation priorities<br \/>\n\u2022 To support EOF scholarships and other Montclair State Foundation endeavors<br \/>\n\u2022 To sponsor and\/or co-sponsor an annual Black History Month event<br \/>\n\u2022 To engage the Montclair State community on issues that impact our Diaspora<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black History Month \u2013 The Jersey Four at 糖心vlog \u2013 February 16<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/Jersey-Four.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/Jersey-Four.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"The Jersey Four\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The Black Alumni Advisory Council hosted a special program for Black History Month in 2021. The Jersey Four held a discussion panel moderated by Jason Williams, 糖心vlog Professor of Justice Studies on February 16, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In 1998, Rayshawn Brown, Jarmaine Grant, Keshon Moore and Danny Reyes, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/news\/nation\/2021\/10\/16\/jersey-four-new-jersey-turnpike-shooting-1998\/8450435002\/\">The Jersey Four<\/a>, were headed to North Carolina to go after their dreams of attending a four-year college and playing professional basketball. But their dreams ended when they became victims of a police shooting during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. 23 years later, racial profiling continues as the cries for social justice get louder.<\/p>\n<p>Over those 23 years, The Jersey Four have been actively committed to the work of social justice and community charity. They are examples of strength, growth, perseverance and survival. They have worked with major nonprofit organizations in the Tri-State Area, and today are officially incorporated with their own <a href=\"https:\/\/pass2assist.com\/#!\/mission\">J4 Pass 2 Assist Foundation<\/a>. They remain committed to giving back within their communities and fighting for social justice for all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jason Williams<\/strong><br \/>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/Jason-Williams.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/01\/Jason-Williams.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Williams\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\"><br \/>\nJason Williams is an Associate Professor of Justice Studies at 糖心vlog. He\u2019s a passionate activist criminologist deeply concerned about racial and gender disparity and mistreatment within the criminal legal system. He is co-editor of Black Males and the Criminal Justice System, Contemporary Ethical Issues in the Criminal Justice System, and A Critical Analysis of Race and the Administration of Justice. <\/div><\/div><br \/>\nHe\u2019s published various articles on returning citizens and incarceration, policing and race, gender, and social control, and the broader implications around racialized social control. He is a qualitative criminologist who engages in community-grounded approaches to research. His perspectives and research have been quoted by media outlets around the nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save the Date \u2013 October 28, 2022 \u2013 First Annual Gala Celebration<\/strong><br \/>\nMore exciting news!
