  {"id":207138,"date":"2019-10-28T10:20:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/biology\/?p=207138"},"modified":"2019-10-28T10:20:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:20:33","slug":"sacrificing-2000-trees-to-thwart-a-troublesome-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/biology\/2019\/10\/28\/sacrificing-2000-trees-to-thwart-a-troublesome-beetle\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacrificing 2,000 Trees To Thwart a Troublesome Beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A New Jersey city is giving the axe to thousands of ash trees to help fight off the invasive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/tag\/emerald-ash-borer\/\">emerald ash borer beetle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As CBSN New York\u2019s Charlie Cooper found out Thursday, not all residents may like the idea, but it\u2019s likely necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Ash trees make up about a fifth of the trees in Montclair, but the city said it plans to cut down 2,000 of them, whether they\u2019re infected or not.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a way to fight off emerald ash borer beetles that have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2011\/07\/26\/emerald-ash-borer-beetle-doing-incredible-damage-to-area-trees\/\">already attacked dozens of trees in the area<\/a>. Arborists say the likelihood of an uninfected tree being impacted is very high.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper spoke to ÌÇÐÄvlog biology professor Dirk Vanderklein, who said the best bet is to cut them down despite some neighbors wanting to keep them around for beauty purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere or some insecticides that could be used, but that\u2019s very expensive,\u201d Vanderklein said. \u201cSo there\u2019s a trade off. Do you want the city to spend a lot of money on an insecticide that may or may not kill off the insect?
