Gain Professional Experience this Summer

  • Campus Recreation is looking for lifeguards for this summer! We offer flexible schedules, a variety of special events and a fun working environment. Not yet certified? No problem! Just pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard Test, take our lifeguard course for free, then get paid to guard.

Reflect on the Past Year

This year, you’ve endured uncertain and difficult times. Reflect on the perseverance, agility and resilience needed to overcome these challenges. These are qualities that not only shape who you will become in the future, but they are also qualities that employers look for in new hires.

With this past year in mind, take some time to discover your strengths, explore your interests and decide what’s important to you. Career Services offers self-assessment tools to help you set your long- and short-term career goals. Summer break is a good time to take an assessment. Make sure to set up an appointment with your Career Advisor to review your results.

Brush Up and Upskill

Gain a New Skill or Sharpen a Current Skill Set

  • Register for online courses that expand your skill set, add badges to your profile and set you apart from other candidates. Online courses are a great way to keep your knowledge fresh and broaden your understanding in your field.
  • Summer Sessions: If you’re still unsure about your career path, experiment with a class in another field to better pinpoint your direction. Montclair State offers a variety of skill-building summer courses.

Refresh Your Resume

  • You’ve worked hard this past year; make sure that is reflected on your resume and public professional profiles! Add any new activities and experiences as well as skills and competencies you have gained or strengthened. Include relevant coursework and update your GPA! Then, upload your resume to Hire a Red Hawk for feedback from career services.
  • Are You Career Ready? The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified core competencies as a measure of career-readiness. Evaluate whether you possess these competencies and where you can improve. When writing your resume and/or cover letter, be sure to highlight experiences that demonstrate these competencies.

Prepare for Upcoming or Future Interviews

  • Phone and video interviews are more common than ever, so make sure you are comfortable with both mediums. Outline answers to common interview questions and practice calm, concise delivery with a friend over video chat.
  • Use the Hire a Red Hawk Mock Interview module to perfect your video interviewing skills and send to Career Services, a favorite professor or whomever else for feedback on your performance.

Good News for 2019 graduates!  According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers’ 2019 Job Outlook survey, U.S. college hiring is expected to increase by almost 17 percent.  Employers with plans to increase their new college hiring cited early talent/succession planning among the reasons for the increase.  Many of the respondents in this group also reported that they plan to concentrate on converting more interns to full-time hires.

Furthermore, 50 percent of employers from the Mideast region are expecting to increase their college hiring and 35.7 percent are expecting to maintain their college hiring.  The Mideast has an overall, projected increase in the number of college hires reported in the double-digits at just about 18 percent.

Resume Tips to Help You Stand Out!

For many employers, a well-written resume is what catches their attention.  In fact, 80% of the 2019 Job Outlook survey respondents seek proof of strong written communication skills through a candidate’s resume.  In addition to strong written communication skills, employers are also rely on the resume to demonstrate a candidate’s problem-solving skills and ability to work in a team.

When it comes to choosing between two (or more) equally qualified candidates, employers looks for attributes on a candidate’s resume that influence their decision.  At the top of the list, employers rank having completed an internship as being the most influential attribute when selecting one candidate over another.  In order of most influential to least, employers also noted that they look for the following attributes on a candidate’s resume:

  • Has completed an internship within organization
  • Has internship experience within industry
  • Major
  • Has held a leadership position
  • Has general work experience
  • Has been involved in extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, student government, etc.)
  • High GPA (3.0 or above)
  • School attended
  • Has done volunteer work
  • Is fluent in a foreign language
  • Has studied abroad

With college hiring increasing in 2019, it’s important for graduating students to be engaged with the Career Services offices in their college/school.  At ÌÇÐÄvlog, each college/school has its own designated career services office, designed to connect you with career and internship opportunities in your field of study!  There are many ways to connect with career services!  Here are a few that we recommend:

  • : you may not know where to look or how to start your job or internship search.  From freshman year to graduation, the career counselors in your college/school are there to support you at all stages of your career development.
  • : When you upload your resume, it is automatically routed to your career services office for review and feedback.  As you can see from the 2019 Job Outlook Survey, it’s important to have a competitive, well-written resume to making a lasting, first impression on hiring employers.  Take advantage of this free resource as you begin your job and internship search!
  • : Career Services will be hosting industry-specific career and internship fairs throughout the spring semester. Employers from various organizations will be on campus recruiting students and alumni for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities!
  • : Year-over-year employers report that having internship experience is the most influential attribute when making hiring selections.  This year, employers report that they are planning to increase the number of full-time job offers that they extend to their interns.  Having completed an internship gives you a competitive edge when entering the job market.
  • : Did you know that career services at Montclair State offers you career development workshop almost every week in the spring semester?  By attending these workshops, you can learn the most effective and efficient ways to achieve your short- and long-term career goals.
  • : When evaluating candidates, it’s clear that there are core competencies that are important to employers.  Have you ever taken the time to evaluate your strengths, values and interests?  It’s an important step in your career development and career services offers a free, easy-to-use self assessment tool.

Fall 2016 Career Fair /career-services/2016/07/19/16717_fall-2016-career-fair/ Tue, 19 Jul 2016 18:16:53 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=16717 Did you know that many employers begin recruiting full-time and internship hires for May 2017 as early as September 2016?  Be among the first to speak with these employers about their opportunities at one of the State’s earliest University/College Career Fairs.

ÌÇÐÄvlog’s annual Fall Career Fair will be held on in the University Hall, 7th floor Conference Center.  This event is co-sponsored by CART Career Services, CHSS Career Services, CSAM Career Services, and the Center for Career Services.

Who Will Be There

Typically, the Fall Career Fair hosts over 60 employers from a wide variety of industries, such as social services, non-profit organizations, state/government agencies and corporate organizations.  See who will be attending this year’s fair.  .

What You Need to Know

This career fair is open to students from all majors as well as alumni and community members.  Current students must bring their University IDs.  All attendees are encouraged to bring plenty of copies of their resume.  The dress code is professional business attire only.

We recommend that students and alumni pre-register for the Fall 2016 Career Fair to guarantee entrance and receive an email reminder prior to the event.  Please note, pre-registration is only available to current Montclair State students and alumni.  If you are a staff member or community member, please be sure to check in at the event.

How To Prepare

Career Services will be hosting a series of workshops and events to help attendees prepare for the fair.

  • : Wednesday, September 7, Student Center, Rooms 415 – 419.  Workshops begin at 11:30 a.m.
  • : Tuesday, September 13, Student Center Ballrooms B & C.  Stop by any time between 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Employers Interested in Attending

Connect with qualified internship and job candidates and gain valuable exposure for your organization.  The registration fee covers two representatives and includes lunch, a table with two chairs and two parking passes.
