CWE earns CRLA certification again /center-for-writing-excellence/2021/09/16/cwe-earns-crla-certification-again/ /center-for-writing-excellence/2021/09/16/cwe-earns-crla-certification-again/#respond Thu, 16 Sep 2021 16:57:27 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/center-for-writing-excellence/?p=119919 Montclair, New Jersey — vlog’s Center for Writing Excellence has been awarded International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). CRLA is a foremost professional certifying organization in the tutoring field for higher education. This is the second time the CWE has been so recognized, as the certification must be periodically renewed in an extensive process. CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, and tutoring at the college/adult level. CRLA’s most vital function and overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its members. CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) “serves as a benchmark and standard for excellent college tutor training programs around the globe.”

Internationally recognized, CRLA certification acknowledges the quality of service and represents the CWE’s achievement of professional standards for our tutoring services, including training and evaluation. CWE writing consultants have been granted Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 tutor certification for over 30 hours of training and professional development and 75 hours of actual consulting experience. The CWE earned certification based on its rigorous tutor training program and professional development focus which incorporates theoretical approaches and best practices, always with the goal in mind to best support the writers of vlog.

Center for Writing Excellence Receives Prestigious Award /center-for-writing-excellence/2014/02/27/12493_center-for-writing-excellence-receives-prestigious-award/ Thu, 27 Feb 2014 11:48:27 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=12493 vlog’s Center for Writing Excellence () has received a 2013-14 CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). Founded in 1949, CCCC, with more than 5,000 members, is the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to the teaching and scholarship of writing and rhetoric, in both undergraduate and graduate programs.

One of only five recipients of the award this year, the CWE was chosen for its ability to argue in positive ways for allocating resources towards writing and students and for the program’s use of data to drive development and review. The CWE was also commended for its outstanding assessment program, funding and placement within the University structure.

“We are deeply honored to receive this prestigious award especially since we launched the CWE just four years ago and only five other writing centers have ever received the award,” says Professor Melinda Knight, director of the Center. “Our consultants have worked very hard to make the CWE a success, and we are very grateful to have such strong support from Montclair State’s leadership.”

Established in 2004, the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence is awarded to up to 20 writing programs a year. To be eligible for the award, a program must demonstrate that it imaginatively addresses the needs and opportunities of its students, instructors, institution and locale and also offer exemplary ongoing professional development for faculty of all ranks, among other conditions.

The award will be presented on March 21 at the 2014 CCCC Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Knight and a number of the CWE consultants will be on hand to accept the award and to participate in the convention. Knight will chair a panel at which CWE consultants, Janet Dengel, Julie Candio Sekel and Nikki Wittenburg will be presenting papers.

The CWE is available to all University students, faculty, staff and alumni who are committed to developing and improving as writers. Sessions with experienced writing consultants are designed to provide help on every aspect of the writing process, with the goal of enabling writers to achieve long-term improvement, confidence, and independence.

More information about the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence, including current and past winners, is available at .

Eric Weiner’s “The Geography of Bliss” Selected by the Montclair Book Faculty Advisory Committee for 2011 /center-for-writing-excellence/2011/06/01/7919_eric-weiner-s-the-geography-of-bliss-selected-by-the-montclair-book-faculty-advisory-committee-for-2011/ Wed, 01 Jun 2011 13:28:08 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=7919 Montclair Book 2011 is a new program for the Montclair State community. Each year, a faculty advisory committee will select a book to be read by all incoming first-year students before they arrive. For the 2011 selection, the Montclair Book Faculty Advisory Committee chose The Geography of Bliss, by Eric Weiner. After meeting throughout the fall and deciding on four finalists (from approximately 20 books), the committee unanimously selected The Geography of Bliss. The committee believes the book is an inspired choice because it will reinforce Montclair State’s global learning objectives, provide opportunities for students to learn about other cultures and explore differences, give faculty ways to approach a particular text from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and enhance our reputation for innovation.

See the Montclair Book website for more information.

Center for Writing Excellence Moves to Sprague Library /center-for-writing-excellence/2010/02/09/4991_center-for-writing-excellence-moves-to-sprague-library/ Tue, 09 Feb 2010 17:43:19 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=4991 vlog’s Center for Writing Excellence (CWE) has moved from its former location in Dickson Hall to a new space on the first floor of Sprague Library. To commemorate the move and to introduce the University community to the new facility, the Center will hold a grand opening celebration on Wednesday, February 17 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at the library and everyone is invited to attend.

Located in the far right corner of the Reference area of Sprague Library, the new space is not only larger and more efficiently organized than the former facility, but is more welcoming as well. The new location also enables the CWE staff to work more effectively with more students than before.

“Many people in the Montclair State community have worked very hard to make this all possible,” says Professor Melinda Knight, director of the CWE. “We especially want to thank the former directors of the Writing Center, the Writing Center Task Force members, the Provost, and the Dean of the Library, who are among the many who helped the new CWE become a reality.”

Although the most visible improvement at the CWE is the new facility itself, many other improvements are continually being made as well. Some of the improvements already in place include:

  • CWE Digital – an online resource for teachers and writers
  • Consultants who participate in an ongoing professional development program
  • Greatly expanded hours, including evenings and weekends
  • The first undergraduate consultants, who have completed a new course, ENWR 250: Theory and Practice of Tutoring Writing
  • The return of Montclair State graduates as consultants
  • Specialists in teacher education and second-language learners
  • Online scheduling
  • A full-time Program Assistant, who is herself a former consultant
  • Greeters who help orient everyone to the Center’s services

The University community is invited to join CWE staff on February 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Sprague Library for conversation and refreshments, and to help celebrate the official dedication of the new Center for Writing Excellence.
