The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at vlog hosted Dr. Koen DePryck to discuss a teaching method known as, “ChallengeBased Learning”.

This event was hosted by the Deans office and the CHSS Digital Media CoLab handled the virtual meeting and on-site technology support. This was the last college meeting of the 2022-2023 academic school year, and took place on April 5, 2023 from 3:30-5:30. The presentation took place on-campus, in Brantl Lecture Hall, as well as virtually via Zoom.

Challenge Based Learning enhances students problems solving and comprehension skills, centering a class around a real world problem such as global warming. Using different perspectives of problem solving students can look from all angels to conceptualize multiple ways to go about achieving their goal. Thismethod of teaching can impact a teachers control in the classroom, letting students sort through personal and social impacts to come up with possible solutions. Once the possible questions that need to be examined are identified the professors then attempt to guide students through the thinking process that could lead them to their end goal.

When asked, ” Why do you feel reassured that Challenge Based Learning is necessary, ” Dr. Koen DePryck responded , ” I believe that education is one of the few elements that we have that can really make difference as far as our future is concerned… I really believe that is how we are built evolutionary. And with all my years with being involved with education I have never come across something as impactful as challenge based learning. Its not about replacing all other methods but about how we can get all learners involved in shaping the future… It’s a really crucial element in moving beyond the education and society divide…They can really hands on make a difference, not after college but while they are in college.”

What is the NJCH Community History (CH) program?

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities Community History program is an intensive, experiential offering for nonprofit organizations interested in documenting community stories, especially from voices often overlooked or marginalized.

The CH program allows organizations to participate in a structured course to develop an understanding of the principles of public history, investigate tools and modalities for doing that work in concert with their communities, and work with history professionals of various expertise. Each organization receives seed funding to begin their community history project.

All participants should review the njhumanities.org prior to participating in the webinar.

Funded through the “Why it Matters: Civic and Electoral Participation” initiative, the Democracy Conversation Project (DCP) is a public humanities program designed to foster discussions among New Jersey communities about civic life and democracy in America. In these upcoming online events, participants can explore what democracy means, what opportunities are available and what challenges exist for nonprofits wishing to engage with civic life, and how NJCH can best support the cultural infrastructure of the state in the coming years as we all strive to enact and improve upon the society envisioned in the founding of the United States.

The Radical Futures symposium brings together researchers from Germany and the US to discuss both the future of media and form(at)s of imagination/imaginaries in the 21st century. Central to the discussion is the role of knowledge of the future for the imagination of digital media in a variety of potential social contexts. How can our imagination contribute to knowing the future? Which kinds of imaginaries do we consult for this purpose? Whose imagination/imaginaries receive(s) a voice? What past imaginations/imaginaries have infused the present? What diverse digital media can we conjure up for futures that may not reflect who we are today? What truths are available today that inform realities to come?

This year long series of workshops starts from a simple premise:

What does it look like to think, engage, and do research in this digital age?

This question cuts across the ways we consume culture, digest news, carry out politics, and craft ourselves. This series is a call for researchers to account for the ever increasingly digital world in which we live. In order to better activate our scholarship we must reimagine our methods, modes of collaboration, and how to participate in these quickly changing digital landscapes.

Many junior scholars are now working across a digital multimedia landscape and they are pushing the genres of storytelling, engagement, augmentation – thus changing the scales and shapes of their scholarship. Digital Forays in Middle Eastern Studies addresses threads from the Digital Humanities (DH), but also from an array of other ambiguous buzzwords: “Digital Scholarship,” “Public Humanities,” “Digital Publishing,” “Big Data.” At stake in changing methodologies are a range of interconnected issues that amount to seismic shifts in how we deepen, develop, and disseminate our research. Indeed, at present, the perils/promise of our digital age are exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced the most basic scholarly activities of teaching and research into online-compatible modalities – and ongoing dissent and protest in the Middle East (and around the world) where digital devices become appendages of how we capture, circulate, and remake the world.

Moderator: Arnaud Kurze (Department of Justice Studies)

The event brings together scholars discussing the politics of information dissemination in the context of transnational labor, organized crime, and systemic genderized and race-based injustice.

Manipulative disinformation campaigns relying on social media have not only affected the very foundations of our political systems in recent years, but have also distorted our understanding of social issues, such as human trafficking. This round-table seeks to scrutinize the connections between the politics of information dissemination, large global patterns of anti-feminist oppression in the context of transnational labor and organized crime, and systemic genderized and race-based injustice in different criminal justice systems to cope with these challenges. Panelists including scholars from a variety of fields and disciplines share their views and reflect on how to best envision and implement strategies to address these repressive, power-driven institutional and cultural obstacles at home and abroad.
