Our Incubation and Action Grants fund the development of meaningful humanities projects for New Jersey audiences. The most competitive projects demonstrate an awareness of the needs and interests of your audience and offer an opportunity for community members to explore history, culture, values, and beliefs.

NJCH funds nonprofit organizations to develop meaningful humanities projects for New Jersey audiences.

We welcome applications from libraries, museums, educational institutions, social service organizations, historical societies, cultural organizations, and other community organizations. Colleges and universities will need to demonstrate meaningful public engagement beyond the institution to have a competitive proposal.

Any project supported by NJCH must have at its core. Projects may take any form as long as they meet grant requirements. NJCH staff can help you determine which grant type is most appropriate for the project you envision.

The most competitive grant proposals support one or more of the Council’s primary goals:

  • to build new audiences for the humanities.
  • to bring people of different perspectives and backgrounds together.
  • to explore new program models.
  • to create lively humanities opportunities around the state

In honor of the Spencer Foundation’s 50th Anniversary, the Foundation has
launched The Racial Equity Special Research Grants program to support
education research projects that will contribute to understanding and
ameliorating racial inequality in education. We are interested in funding
studies that aim to understand and disrupt the reproduction and deepening
of educational inequality in education, and which seek to remake and
imagine anew forms of equitable education. Thus, we are also interested in
research projects that are working to reimagine educational opportunities in
a multiplicity of education systems, levels, settings, and developmental
ranges and that reach beyond documenting conditions and paradigms that
contribute to persistent racial inequalities.

Our goal for this program is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious, and
technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions
and compelling opportunities in relation to racial equity in education.
As with other Spencer grant programs, this program is “field-initiated” in that
proposal submissions are not required to be developed around a particular
research topic, discipline, design, method, or geographic location. We will be
accepting applications for projects ranging from one to five years with
budgets up to $75,000.
