The essay, titled “Italy and Italian Studies in the Transnational Space of Migration and Colonial Routes” looks at the shift from a national to a transnational model in the field of Italian Studies, as part of a recognition of Italy’s intrinsic history and culture of mobility, with its ability to revolutionize our understanding of the country. While offering an overview of these transnational forms of mobility in terms of dates, locations, and statistics, the essay addresses the pivotal role of cultural texts (literature, music, film, etc.) in connecting stories of outbound and inbound migration as well as colonialism.

A specific section analyzes the 2011 play Italianesi by Saverio La Ruina, which weaves tales of Italian departures and returns prompted by colonial expansion, international politics, and the lure of Italy, and in the process it productively “confuses” the notion of Italian-ness vis-à-vis an Albanian identity. Overall, the essay illustrates specific pedagogical routes and teaching materials, as well as opportunities and challenges within the classroom, including the yet-unexplored possibility of a pluri-language syllabus for a pluri-cultural student body interested in migrations from/to Italy as a telling example of transnational mobilities at large across time and space.

The essay appears in a volume included in a book series called and in a larger project titled supported by an Arts and Humanities Research Council grant in the UK (2014-2017). The series and the whole project offer an innovative approach to language teaching and learning as part of a transdisciplinary vision.

Book Presentation – Pre-Occupied Spaces Remapping Italy’s Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies by Teresa Fiore (12/11) /chss/2017/11/20/18586_book-presentation-pre-occupied-spaces-remapping-italy-s-transnational-migrations-and-colonial-legacies-by-teresa-fiore-12-11/ Mon, 20 Nov 2017 16:15:19 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=18586 The Departments of , , , and Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at vlog are pleased to present a conversation about , a new book by Dr. Teresa Fiore (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies at vlog), published by Fordham University Press in May 2017.

By linking Italy’s long history of emigration to all continents in the world, contemporary transnational migrations directed toward it, as well as the country’s colonial legacies, Fiore’s book poses Italy as a unique laboratory to rethink national belonging at large in our era of massive demographic mobility. Showing how immigration in Italy today is preoccupied by its past emigration and colonialism, and how the commonalities between the two phenomena can potentially dispel preoccupations, the book offers interpretative routes about demographic and cultural movements that can be relevant to Europe at large as well as the U.S.

This panel will include a presentation by the author in discussion with Montclair State colleagues from the History Department (coeditor of Fordham UP Critical Studies in Italian America), from the Sociology Department and , Chair of Political Science and Law Department.

Fiore’s contribution includes an introduction to the causes, dimensions, and internal diversity of the phenomenon; a comprehensive survey of the publications available on the topic, mostly penned by journalists, and a specific focus on select topics  such as political implications of the recent diaspora, new Italians vs. Italian Americans, and the absence of a circulatory model for migrants from Italy.

Dr. Fiore Delivers Keynote Speech at the University of Oxford (9/23) /chss/2016/09/29/17034_dr-fiore-delivers-keynote-speech-at-the-university-of-oxford-9-23/ Thu, 29 Sep 2016 15:52:08 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/news/article.php?ArticleID=17034
On September 23, 2016 Dr. Teresa Fiore gave a keynote speech at the University of Oxford, UK, on the occasion of the “” conference, which explored how language, literature and cinema have traveled between the two countries and have created layered forms of mutual influence.

Entitled "“New Italians on the Move: The Cultural Impact of the Contemporary U.S.-Bound Exodus,” the keynote speech offered a survey of the literature and art produced by and about new Italian immigrants. It aimed at showing how these new Italians on the move should not just be represented as a loss for the country, but also as an engine for the circulation of the concept of "Italy” in the sense of values and lifestyles, a phenomenon that is producing an increasing “Italianization” of American culture. In linking past and contemporary immigration from Italy through the analysis of Michele Petruzziello’s photography series (), the speech functioned as a preliminary theorization of the concept of “Made in Italy” in the diaspora and the diaspora as “Made in Italy” beyond its more common figuration as artistic creations and objects of consumption.
