  {"id":18412,"date":"2017-09-27T14:01:52","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T18:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=18412"},"modified":"2017-09-27T14:01:52","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T18:01:52","slug":"18412_english-students-and-faculty-share-stage-with-justice-ginsburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/2017\/09\/27\/18412_english-students-and-faculty-share-stage-with-justice-ginsburg\/","title":{"rendered":"English Students and Faculty Share Stage with Justice Ginsburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, September 23, English department faculty and students participated in a roundtable discussion of Shakespeare&#8217;s &quot;The Merchant of Venice&quot; with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and eminent scholars David Scott Kastan and James Shapiro.&nbsp; The event was part of a series of events surrounding Kasser Theater&#8217;s production of The Merchant of Venice, directed by Karin Coonrod.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--> <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/howlround.com\/livestreaming-roundtable-discussion-about-the-merchant-of-venice-at-montclair-state-university-sat\" target=\"_blank\">Watch the video online<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naomi Liebler, professor in the Department of English, introduced the roundtable with a talk that addressed the play&#8217;s relevance to our time, as well as the history of Shakespeare performance both at Montclair State and more generally.&nbsp; <span>\u201cIn all the ways that really matter, this perfect combination, this perfect brainstorm, is not at all surprising with its collection of \u2018others\u2019 in a place suspicious of and yet dependent on them for survival,\u201d said Liebler. \u201c<em>Merchant<\/em> is the right play for us\u2026not only because it vibrates with national and global issues but also because it speaks to this university\u2019s own embrace of diversity.
