Joseph Coccia, Jr. and by Mr. Lawrence R. Inserra, Jr.\u00a0Founded in 1994 by Joseph and Elda Coccia, and now under the leadership of President Elisa Coccia, Coccia Foundation aggressively pursues the preservation and promotion of Italian culture, in conjunction with its \u2018academic arm,\u2019the Coccia Institute for the Italian Experience in America at ÌÇÐÄvlog.\u00a0Mr. Inserra also contributes significantly to the rich field of Italian American Studies, having instituted in 2011 the Theresa and Lawrence R. Inserra Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, also at ÌÇÐÄvlog.<\/p>\n<p>We are pleased to announce that our very generous donors have increased substantially the monetary component of the Coccia-Inserra Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Teaching of Italian (K-12) for academic year 2015 to <em>$5000<\/em>.\u00a0 This generous prize is to be allocated as follows:<\/p>\n<p>a)$2500 is to be used exclusively to advance the Italian language and culture curriculum and programming within the recipient\u2019s classroom;<\/p>\n<p>b)\u00a0$2500 is to be dedicated to the professional development of the winning teacher (for direct payment of academic fees to an institution of professional development in Italian language and culture at home or abroad).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Eligibility<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The award is open to teachers who currently are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a. Members in good standing of one of the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">i.\u00a0 AATI (American Association of Teachers of Italian)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">ii.\u00a0AAIS (American Association of Italian Studies)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">iii. <!--[endif]-->ITANJ (Italian Teachers Association of New Jersey)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b.\u00a0\u00a0The applicant must be a full-time language teacher who is certified as a teacher of Italian and who must be teaching a minimum of two classes of Italian at the K-12 level.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Selection Process<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Blue Ribbon Panel of experts has been established to oversee the process and select the award recipient.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Anthony Julian Tamburri, Distinguished Professor of European Languages and Literatures and Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College (New York, New York) [<em>Panel Chair]<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Dr. Andrea Baldi, Professor of Italian; Undergraduate Director of the Department of Italian at Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey)<\/li>\n<li>Dott. Carlo Davoli, Dirigente Scolastico, Consulate General of Italy in New York\u00a0(New York, New York)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Roberto Dolci, Associate Professor of Linguistics, Universit\u00e0 per Stranieri di Perugia\u00a0(Perugia, Italy)<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Clorinda Donato, George Graziadio Chair in Italian Studies, California State University at Long Beach (Long Beach, California)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Criteria<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Blue Ribbon Panel will evaluate participants on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<strong>a. Planning and Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">i. The teacher\u2019s effectiveness as demonstrated in sample lesson plans that conform to the standards of the Department of Education or other such entity in the state in which the applicant teaches and address the three modes of communication.\u00a0 These plans should evidence:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">1. goals and activities that inspire and engage students in their own learning;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">2. use of technology and 21<sup>st<\/sup>-century skills to enhance the students\u2019 learning experience;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">3. assessment that reflects current practice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>b. Involvement Outside the School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">i. The teacher\u2019s leadership as demonstrated in ACTIVE involvement with professional organizations and the promotion of the Italian language and culture (e.g., presentations, workshops, administrative duties, public relations work) that have benefited the Italian program and its students;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">ii. Creating opportunities for community and\/or parent participation in the Italian program (e.g., film night, festival), where parents and other community members are invited.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>c. Instructional Innovations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">i.\u00a0\u00a0 Evidence of effective instruction practice via supervisor and\/or principal\u2019s classroom observation report<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">ii.\u00a0\u00a0 Student comments\/letters\/etc.;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">iii. Teacher\u2019s self-evaluation and reflections;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">iv. Active participation in Professional Development events, in the capacity of either attendee or presenter, facilitator, workshop leader, etc.;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">v. Teachers must submit a video-recorded lesson or part thereof that is between 15 and 20 minutes in length.\u00a0 Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and privacy setting must be set to Private. The link will be sent to one (1) email address to be viewed by the panelists <em>only<\/em>.
