School of Communication and Media Students Receive Top Honors in Their Fields of Study

Communication Studies majors Brooke O'Donnell and Shannon Boyle won the Top Poster Award at the Eastern Communication Association (ECA) Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Baltimore, April 2016. Students of all majors are enjoying recognitions and awards.

Congratulations to all School of Communication and Media (SCM) students recently recognized for their outstanding research, projects and creative innovations in communication and media, filmmaking and journalism. Below are just a few examples of students making their mark:

• ÌýFilmmaking student NICK CAPRA won first prize and an internship with Sony Pictures Classics for his film “Writer’s Block” at the Project FX Film Festival. Montclair State had four total entries (April, 2016).Ìý

• ÌýCommunication Studies majorsÌýBROOKE O’DONNELL and SHANNON BOYLE won the Top Poster Award at the Eastern Communication Association (ECA) Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Baltimore. Their poster, entitled “Delving Deeper Into the Fourth Wave: Defining Parameters for a New Generation” was presented with their accompanying competitively selected paper, entitled “Towards a Fourth Wave: Connections Between the Millennial Generation and Conceptions of Feminism” (April 2016).

• ÌýSCM students in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter produced a very successful fundraising event for Autism NJ. The “Jersey Stars” concert, featuring comedian Sunda Croonquist, Broadway star Stephanie J. Block, Four Seasons member Don Ciccone, the Montclair State Freshman Revue ensemble, and the Paper Mill Playhouse Broadway Show Choir,Ìýraised more than $6,000 for the autism charity. Professor Larry Weiner serves as advisor to PRSSA (April, 2016)

• ÌýSCM students participated at the 10thÌýAnnual Student Research Symposium at Montclair State. DAN FERRER (Film major) presented a paper titled, “Consequences of Pleasure: The Wolf of Wall Street and the Subversion of the Male Gaze” and FE LORRAINE REYES (English major and Communication minor) presented a paper titled “Racially Charged Costumes: A Report on ‘Othering’ Behavior.” Dr. Marylou Naumoff served as faculty adviser for both projects (April, 2016).Ìý

• ÌýThe Montclarion received three awards from the 2015-16 NJ Collegiate Newspaper Contest, a competition hosted by the New Jersey Press Foundation, which rewarded students for their exceptional media from student newspapers within the state (March, 2016).Ìý

Ìý• ÌýPublic Relations student CYNTHIA HUASIPOMA was named a New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship recipient — Class of 2016. In addition, Cynthia was awarded an IPG (Interpublic Group) internship for the summer season(March, 2016).

• ÌýWMSC won three finalist awards at the 76thÌýIntercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference and Awards.ÌýWMSC is among the top 5 college radio stations in the nation (University with enrollment +10,000), Top 5 Station Manager and Top Best Spot News (March, 2016)

• ÌýSCM students KAAN OGUZ, KRISTIE KELESHIAN, JOSE CORTEZ and faculty members Tara GeorgeÌýandÌýSteve McCarthy collaborated to produce a Newark news story that aired on NJTV News.ÌýThe story followed up on a Valentine’s Day initiative that made headlines a year ago when the city of Newark sold off lots to couples for $1,000 apiece. NJTV News anchor Mary Alice Williams introduced the package on air as the work of students and faculty from ÌÇÐÄvlog.

• ÌýCommunication Studies students SHANNON BOYLE andÌýBROOKE O’DONNELLÌýattended the 73rd Annual New York State Communication Association Conference (NYSCA). They were selected to speak on the “Top Paper Panel” which included two undergraduate papers, two graduate papers, and one paper from a professor. Their research paper won the top undergraduate paper award (October, 2015).
