Physics majors visit fusion experiment at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab /csam/2024/04/22/physics-majors-visit-fusion-experiment-at-the-princeton-plasma-physics-lab/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 12:34:45 +0000 /csam/?p=212141 On April 12th, 2024 a group of 19 Montclair State physics majors (and minors) visited the . Students received a tour of the facility led by Dr. Andrew Zwicker, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Public Engagement, and NJ state Senator from the 16th Legislative District. They were joined by CSAM Dean Lora Billings, and physics professors Kent Leung and Marc Favata.

The outing began with a discussion on fusion energy, followed by a tour of the . NSTX-U will attempt to contain a plasma of hydrogen using strong magnetic fields, eventually heating the plasma to temperatures sufficient to begin fusion reactions. This is the latest in a sequence of experiments at the PPPL to explore the potential of magnetically confined plasmas as a source of fusion energy.

Bristol Myers Squibb to Fund Research for Five CSAM Students /csam/2024/04/10/bristol-myers-squibb-to-fund-research-for-five-csam-students/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 14:10:34 +0000 /csam/?p=212095 A new agreement between ĚÇĐÄvlog and pharmaceutical company will help support the next generation of STEM scholars through exposure to and mentorship within the pharmaceutical industry.

The Princeton-based company granted the University $25,000 as part of the Bristol Myers Squibb Science Scholars Program, to be distributed among five different health-focused research projects led by students in the College.

This program allows students to participate in real world research projects alongside professional scientists, experiencing STEM careers first hand. We are thankful that BMS supports our goal to increase quality experiential learning opportunities as we celebrate the courage, knowledge, and perseverance students draw on to thrive in STEM fields, diversifying the future STEM workforce.

How Effective Communication Benefits Scientists /csam/2024/01/26/how-effective-communication-benefits-scientists/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 14:35:35 +0000 /csam/?p=211931 “Like sushi? You’re going to love this.” That was the hook to an intriguing story about fertility and zebrafish research happening at ĚÇĐÄvlog. As told by the student researchers involved with the project, their style of scientific storytelling earned them the top prize in the University’s Mario M. Casabona Future Scientists Awards competition, which recognizes students for making research more understandable and accessible.

Being an effective science communicator is more important than ever in explaining the work science researchers do, why they do and why it matters, says Melissa Spigelman ’23, a first-year graduate student in Molecular Biology. She’s among the team that sees potential in their research with the zebrafish in advancing fertility and women’s health.

I do really impactful research. But I realize that no one’s going to use my discovery or care about my discovery if I can’t adequately explain my discovery.

Melissa Spigelman, Molecular Biology MS and Fall 2023 Casabona Competition Participant

Mario M. Casabona, an entrepreneur and active angel investor, has fostered the training of well-told stories at Montclair. Through his involvement with – and support for – the College of Science and Mathematics, Casabona helps promote student experiential learning across a broad array of STEM fields and has provided the philanthropic investment needed to launch the communication competition, encouraging students to enhance the presentation skills that are essential for explaining ideas to non-science audiences.

2023 Casabona Winners

  1. Like sushi? You’re going to love this
Wendy E. Islas, BS in Molecular Biology, and Melissa Spigelman, MS in Molecular Biology, mentored by Professor Carlos Molina, Department of Biology
  2. Creating an Immersive and Interactive VR Game for Advancing Elementary Education
Anthony Condegni, BS in Computer Science, Jianna Loor, MS in Computer Science, mentored by Assistant Professor Rui Li, School of Computing
  3. A potential TB target
Uchenna Ezichi, MS in Chemistry, Citlaly Hernandez, BS in Biochemistry, Crystal Montero, MS in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, mentored by Professor Nina Goodey, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

There When You Need Them /csam/2022/12/08/there-when-you-need-them/ /csam/2022/12/08/there-when-you-need-them/#respond Thu, 08 Dec 2022 17:25:27 +0000 /csam/?p=211226 When Angell Alvarez works the night shift as a lieutenant Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for ĚÇĐÄvlog’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program, she sleeps in her uniform so she’s ready for emergency calls.

That way, when she gets a call during the night, sometimes three or four of them, she can quickly jump out of bed, grab her equipment and rush to the scene in the ambulance parked right outside of the EMS base.

As a senior majoring in Molecular Biology, Alvarez joined the EMS program, to receive hands-on patient-care experience and provide comfort to people who need assistance no matter the time of day.

I really love my job since we’re getting called to someone who’s possibly having the worst day of their life and I’m going to offer that person comfort and make their day a little better. Overnights are more hectic because if somebody’s calling you at three in the morning, they probably need to go to the hospital. So while we are allowed to sleep, those are the calls we really have to be on go for.

Angell Alvarez

Liliana Esmail, a senior majoring in Biology, is also a lieutenant EMT who works alongside Alvarez. She describes her shifts as being unpredictable.

Your shifts really can be unpredictable because you could go a day where you have nothing or you could go a day where every hour you clear from one call you get sent to the next but it’s also the fun part of the job.

Liliana Esmail
