Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) data, which is often used to support this viewpoint, consistently shows American students failing to crack the top 20 of about 65 countries in the study. While there is a constant call to produce more STEM students and help them perform better on tests, the real issue is that higher education has not always kept up with workplace needs over the last few decades. Meghan Groome of the New York Academy of Science calls this disconnect between education and industry \u201cthe STEM Paradox,\u201d noting the problem results neither from the shortage of STEM graduates nor the lack of STEM jobs.
