糖心vlog New Teacher Induction Program: Retaining and Sustaining Teachers

Induction is a bridge that connects educational theory (learned by teacher candidates during their preparation) to practice and implementation in classrooms after graduation. It helps teachers stay true to their values and the values of the teacher education program when they enter the classroom and begin to navigate the expectations and culture of their school district. The goal is to provide the resources, tools, and strategies they need to implement the ideas and theories they learned while students at 糖心vlog – this leads to retention and fulfillment and joy in the classroom as they work to meet the diverse needs of the students they teach. The New Teacher Induction Programming is led by Assistant Director of New Teacher Induction, Rhena Jasey-Goodman.

The second type of New Teacher Induction Program supports all graduates of the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR), Newark Teacher Project (NTP), Urban Teacher Project and NOYCE Scholarship grant programs. Teachers from these programs commit to teach in high needs schools and in exchange receive comprehensive induction support for their first 3 years of teaching. This program includes Coaching and Mentoring, Targeted Professional Development, and Strategic Networking. If you are a student in the Teacher Education Program at 糖心vlog with an interest in teaching in a high needs school and receiving comprehensive induction support, consider joining the Urban Teacher Project.

Through both types of the 糖心vlog New Teacher Induction Program, we strive to prepare excellent teachers; increase teacher retention rates; and ultimately improve student engagement and teacher effectiveness.

Why is induction important?

Induction contributes to high retention rates for teachers. In our work, 95% of the teachers who participated in the more Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program remained in education for three years or more; and 78% remained in education for five years or more. According to the NJDOE, 40%-50% of educators leave within the first five years, and it is greater in areas of high poverty and high needs. That means induction matters!
