Default Syllabus Template for Spring 2025: What You Need to Know

As previously announced by Provost Gonzales, the Montclair Syllabus by Simple Syllabus is the default syllabus in Canvas for all courses beginning in Spring 2025. This template, created by OFE and a University Faculty Committee, and administered and supported by ITDS, helps instructors quickly produce a familiar, easy-to-navigate syllabus that students rate as much more helpful than others instructors use. Designed especially for instructors who have not previously used the Montclair Syllabus by Simple Syllabus, this session will offer a brief overview, rationale, and basic how-to along with some tips about adding your own style to the template.

Academic dishonesty and challenging student behavior are topics that faculty hope they never need to address–however, understanding the conduct process and being proactive is quite valuable. Join us for this session with Montclair’s Director of Student Conduct, Christopher Trautman, and Kevin Schafer, co-chair of the CARE team and Associate Director for Residential Support Services in the Office of Residence Life. Faculty members are not on their own when it comes to supporting students. We know faculty play a crucial role in fostering a nurturing environment that addresses students’ broader needs of well-being and success. It’s a collective effort that involves engaging departments and resources. Instructors might not always be aware of the types of resources they can refer their students to. To bridge this gap, representatives from the Dean of Students Office (DOS) will shed light on the available resources as well as address the DOS’s role in helping students deal with their absences effectively, this week’s Strong Student Campaign theme. Questions welcome!

Teaching at Montclair 101: March 7

We invite all instructors, new or fairly new to teaching at Montclair, to this 90-minute information session. We will orient faculty in navigating the University, using the Montclair Syllabus, anchoring course plans with course objectives and learning outcomes, and finding resources to support teaching excellence. There will be time for your questions, ideas, challenges, and other topics concerning getting started with teaching.

Instructors with teaching experience at other institutions are encouraged to attend.
