The course is beginner-friendly; it will be a good resource for brand-new instructors or for instructors new to Montclair. It will also be helpful to anyone who would like to review the fundamentals of effective and inclusive teaching and receive practical teaching tips.

Additionally, you will get the opportunity to receive confidential, supportive feedback: the course is facilitated by the OFE team members who will review your submissions and get back to you with personalized tips and guidance.

After completing the course, you will maintain access to it on Canvas, so you can come back to it at any time.

Lunch-and-Learn Schedule Details
  • Tuesday, May 30: Grant writing, with Maneesha Kelkar
    • Have a vague idea about a grant? Not sure how to start? At this session, Maneesha Kelkar will lead participants through a basic overview of grant writing, with particular attention to grants in the social justice field. Although individual grants and fields have their own requirements, Maneesha will draw on her experiences writing and reviewing grants to offer some more broadly applicable tips. Bring ideas you have for your own grant proposal or learn some ideas for future applications.
    • Maneesha Kelkar has nearly two decades of experience leading social justice organizations, with work ranging from service provision to policy advocacy. She has consistently used grant writing as a key tool to raise funds for the issues she believes in.
  • Wednesday, May 31: Creating a scholarly profile, with Siobhan McCarthy (Sprague Library)
    • How are scholarly profiles different from any other professional or social network, and how can maintaining one improve your visibility as a researcher, or help with job prospects as a graduate student? In this workshop, we will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the various scholarly networks, including Research Gate, Google Scholar, ORCID, and Selected Works (Digital Commons).
  • Thursday, June 1: Finding Venues for Publication: Research Tools and Considerations, with Catherine Baird (Sprague Library)
    • In this mini-session, we’ll talk about discovering journals, as well as considerations of quality, open access, predatory and peripheral publishers.

We invite participants to commit as much as they can to get the most out of the program, but everyone sets their own schedule.

Sign up by May 24th to receive an invitation to write out and articulate your goals in advance — the more we plan, the better we execute.

  • learn more about OER,
  • find resources for their courses, and
  • incorporate them into their pedagogy.

OER can serve many different purposes, including reducing course costs for students, providing more relevant resources for your course, and filling in gaps in representation. Open pedagogy is the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it (description licensed under a by the University of Texas Arlington Libraries).

3:00pm – 4:15pm
HYBRID (Zoom & ADP Center 1143)

Presenter: In this lecture Pavlo Lushyn (Educational Foundations) will make a case for the end of the “PTSD industry” (Stephen Joseph) and the emergence of a more generative view of trauma articulated by the Post-Traumatic Growth Movement.  As a practitioner of both psychotherapy and teaching, Professor Lushyn’s lecture integrates theory with stories of post-traumatic growth, reflecting his decades of work in and out of the classroom, and his most immediate experiences supporting Ukrainians experiencing the trauma of war today. Professor Lushyn will draw on his experiences and expertise to suggest implications for teaching – relevant to all instructors as we continue to encounter a student population that exhibits mental health disturbances in response to traumatic experiences.

Respondent: Laura Quiros (Social Work and Child Advocacy) will provide an initial response to Professor Lushyn’s talk based on work using trauma-informed pedagogies to advance social justice by building social connection, inclusion, and empathetic accountability.

This session will be introduced by Pablo Tinio, Chairperson, Educational Foundations.
