Advanced AI for Teaching /faculty-excellence/2024/05/05/advanced-ai-for-teaching/ /faculty-excellence/2024/05/05/advanced-ai-for-teaching/#respond Sun, 05 May 2024 19:46:44 +0000 /faculty-excellence/?p=12074 This intensive workshop will showcase techniques that instructors can use to leverage Gen AI tools for advancing student learning. The workshop will feature Dr. Weitian Wang’s talk “Montclair AI for Teaching and AI Education: Examples, Progresses, and Future Plans,” discussing the implications of AI for teaching and the landscape of AI education programming at Montclair. After that we will share a toolbox of prompts, sample assignments, and implementation strategies for helping students learn how to use Gen AI productively and ethically. Participants will have the opportunity to work independently or in groups to construct their own assignments or activities using our toolbox. OFE staff will be available to assist and provide feedback.
This event is co-organized by the OFE and Montclair Robotics and AI Seminar Series (RAISe).

There are academic and classroom stressors that are particularly salient among students of color who may experience daily microaggressions, harassment, and racial discrimination. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique experiences of undergraduate and graduate students of color in the classroom, taking into account disciplinary cultures and the broader campus climate. This session will also offer practical guidance for how instructors can promote well-being in campus learning environments and support the mental health of students of color. Led by Jan Collins-Eaglin, Senior Advisor for the Steve Fund, a national organization dedicated to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of young people of color.

Teaching Basics /faculty-excellence/2023/06/27/teaching-basics/ /faculty-excellence/2023/06/27/teaching-basics/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2023 19:47:41 +0000 /faculty-excellence/?p=10178 This year we’ve been hard at work designing a new asynchronous course for teachers called “Teaching Basics.” The idea of this self-paced mini-course is to support and enhance your teaching as a college-level instructor. The course is beginner-friendly; it will be a good resource for brand-new instructors or for instructors new to Montclair. It will also be helpful to anyone who would like to review the fundamentals of effective and inclusive teaching and receive practical teaching tips.

Additionally, you will get the opportunity to receive confidential, supportive feedback: the course is facilitated by the OFE team members who will review your submissions and get back to you with personalized tips and guidance.

After completing the course, you will maintain access to it on Canvas, so you can come back to it at any time.

3:00pm – 4:15pm
HYBRID (Zoom & ADP Center 1143)

Presenter: In this lecture Pavlo Lushyn (Educational Foundations) will make a case for the end of the “PTSD industry” (Stephen Joseph) and the emergence of a more generative view of trauma articulated by the Post-Traumatic Growth Movement.  As a practitioner of both psychotherapy and teaching, Professor Lushyn’s lecture integrates theory with stories of post-traumatic growth, reflecting his decades of work in and out of the classroom, and his most immediate experiences supporting Ukrainians experiencing the trauma of war today. Professor Lushyn will draw on his experiences and expertise to suggest implications for teaching – relevant to all instructors as we continue to encounter a student population that exhibits mental health disturbances in response to traumatic experiences.

Respondent: Laura Quiros (Social Work and Child Advocacy) will provide an initial response to Professor Lushyn’s talk based on work using trauma-informed pedagogies to advance social justice by building social connection, inclusion, and empathetic accountability.

This session will be introduced by Pablo Tinio, Chairperson, Educational Foundations.
