Temoney<\/a>, Department of Religion Chairperson and Special Advisor to the Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Interdisciplinarity?<\/h2>\n<p><em>*Summation of\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/ualberta.ca\/rick-szostak\/research\/about-interdisciplinarity\/definitions\/defining-interdisciplinary\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/ualberta.ca\/rick-szostak\/research\/about-interdisciplinarity\/definitions\/defining-interdisciplinary&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1727883359457000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0HFUzVPes5USB1c_u8rdX9\">\u201cDefining \u2018Interdisciplinary,\u2019\u201d<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/interdisciplinarystudies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/interdisciplinarystudies.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1727883359457000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3tIa95tXUNdYFyMqaHlP7g\">Association for Interdisciplinary Studies<\/a>\u00a0Resource<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A definition of interdisciplinarity is unsettled, and can be pursued by a single scholar or among many, but there is an emerging consensus that it involves several key components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Interdisciplinarians focus on particular problems or questions that are too complex to be answered satisfactorily by any one discipline.<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinarians draw upon the insights of specialized research, fostered by communities of scholars who share a set of guiding questions and concepts and utilize\u00a0 multiple theories, and methods.\u00b7<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinarians integrate the best elements of disciplinary insights in order to generate a more comprehensive (and often more nuanced) appreciation of the issue at hand. This may come in the form of a new understanding, new product, or new meaning\u2013often with a stress on \u2018integration\u2019 as the defining element.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Events and Workshops<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p><strong>Meet &amp; Greet \/ &#8220;Speed Dating&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, April 21, 2\u20134pm, Schmitt Hall 327<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enjoy a light meal while networking with colleagues who are currently pursuing or interested in pursuing interdisciplinary research and teaching opportunities. To follow will be activities, including &#8220;speed dating,&#8221; designed to connect you with faculty with similar interests and to brainstorm collaborations.The ability to participate for the entire two hours is ideal but not mandatory.
