Professional staff partners are here to help students, whether it&#8217;s an academic issue, a psychological issue, a life issue, or something you&#8217;re just not able to label. However, most students need an individual suggestion, a referral, or simply more awareness of the services in order to take advantage of them. To help you help students, this page collects a variety of resources for you to draw on.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, a full list of student resources is automatically embedded in the default syllabus of your Canvas course. Managed by the Office for Undergraduate Education, Navigate is used by every advisor to track, check on, and support undergraduate students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every semester you will receive periodic requests from the Provost\u2019s office to use the Navigate platform to report on students\u2019 progress. The University advisors depend on instructors to follow through with these requests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, outside of required reporting periods, you can use Navigate to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Issue a warning\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Message students directly\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reach out to students\u2019 advisors &#8212; most students have a few advisors, including potentially an academic major advisor, a college or school advisor, and possibly a special program (EOF, health careers, athletic, etc.) advisor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through Navigate instructors can review the progress of students in their class and, if they serve as advisors, their advisees.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Navigate is not the tool if go to if there is a classroom emergency or you are concerned about a student&#8217;s well-being. For concerns about safety or a classroom emergency, call the Campus Police at <a href=\"tel:973-655-5222\" class=\"\"><span class=\"a11y-phone-number initialized\" aria-label=\"9 7 3 6 5 5 52 22 \">973-655-5222<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-academic-success-and-tutoring\/\">Center for Academic Success and Tutoring (CAST)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>CAST is the primary source of academic support for students<\/strong>. CAST hires student and professional tutors who have expertise in most disciplines offered on campus. Instructors interact with CAST through three primary means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Send students to support from CAST informally, through class-wide communications, or by making recommendations to students individually.<\/li>\n<li>Refer students to CAST by a Navigate referral that prompts CAST to reach out to students directly.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with CAST on providing an organized program of supplemental instruction to students who are enrolled in courses that are especially hard for students. If your course does not include supplemental instruction and you think it should, discuss the matter with department leaders and then set up an appointment with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-academic-success-and-tutoring\/staff\/\">CAST leadership<\/a> to see what can be arranged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See more of what CAST does by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-academic-success-and-tutoring\/\">reviewing the CAST website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-writing-excellence\/\">Center for Writing Excellence (CWE)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The Center for Writing Excellence (CWE) is the main support service on campus to help students develop and improve as writers. The CWE supports faculty and students through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-writing-excellence\/appointments\/\"><strong>consultations<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-writing-excellence\/news-and-events\/\"><strong>open workshops<\/strong>,<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-writing-excellence\/request-a-presentation\/?\"><strong> in-class presentations<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consultations generally last 25 minutes and are available online and in-person (<a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.mywconline.com\">schedule an appointment<\/a>). Longer appointments are available for graduate students, multilingual writers, students with disabilities, and faculty.\u00a0 All sessions are confidential.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, writing consultants can help students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get started: Understanding the writing task and generating ideas<\/li>\n<li>Draft: Developing a focus and an argument, selecting appropriate evidence, and organizing their ideas<\/li>\n<li>Revise: Choosing strategies to improve drafts<\/li>\n<li>Polish: Learning to edit their own writing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CWE also serves faculty, staff, and alumni with their writing needs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bloomfield.edu\/academics\/academic-centers\/otwass\">Office of Tutoring, Writing, and Academic Support Services (OTWASS)<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Bloomfield campus<\/strong>, tutoring Center and Writing Center, Testing and Test Preparation, Academic Support Counseling, Graduate Preparation, a Group Study Hub and the Office of Adult Education\u200b.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/disability-resource-center\/\">The Disability Resource Center (DRC)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The DRC assists students in receiving the accommodations and services necessary to equalize access. The DRC provides assistance to students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological, neurological, and chronic medical disabilities. The mission of the DRC is to provide students with disabilities the excellence and equity in education to which they are legally entitled.<\/p>\n<p>Instructors will interact with the DRC in a few ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will provide instructors a letter from the DRC documenting accommodations.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The DRC provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/disability-resource-center\/faculty-resources\/?\">faculty resources<\/a> offering advice on providing accommodations. The DRC staff can consult with instructors who want help in providing accommodations or thinking about how to talk with a student an instructor believes may benefit from DRC services. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomfield.edu\/disability-services\/\">Services for Students with Disabilities<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> Bloomfield campus<\/strong>: Assistance for students in receiving accommodations to equalize access.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/school-of-communication-and-media\/public-speaking-resource-center\/\">Public Speaking Resource Center (PSRC)<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assistance and coaching for individual or group presentations. and job interviewing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/library\/services-and-spaces\/services-for-faculty\/\">Reference and Research Librarians<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Our research librarians are partners in instruction, offering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research consultations for students<\/strong>. The Reference Desk is open for drop-ins, chats, and appointments. If a student is struggling with an assignment or wants guidance on a research task, recommend or require your student to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.libcal.com\/appointments\">1-1 appointment, online or in-person<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/library\/services-and-spaces\/instruction-and-workshops\/\">Library instruction for your whole class<\/a>. A research librarian can lead a workshop on general topics (such as general introduction to research) or one tailored to your course and\/or assignment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research assignment design help for faculty.<\/strong> Get help in developing research assignments and building out the content of their course by <a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.libcal.com\/appointments\">meeting with a research librarian<\/a>. Consult with a librarian on a <a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.libguides.com\/\">research guide<\/a> for your course.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Health Partners&colon; Mental and Physical Health<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/\">Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>CAPS services are free, voluntary, confidential and available to all Montclair State students, faculty, and staff. CAPS offers a range of services from online resources to informal sessions to individual therapy options. When faculty have concerns about students, and none of the resources below seem quite right, a recommendation to visit the DOS is a good option. In addition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students who have prolonged health issues that cause extended absence should be referred to the DOS. For students with a few absences, direct them to your absentee policy and guidance on making up missed work rather than the DOS. The DOS only gets involved with more impactful health-related absences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/msu-cares\/\">The Care Team<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CARE Team, managed by the Dean of Students, pulls together support offices from across domains to address problems for individual students that faculty and others report to the CARE team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you don\u2019t know whom to contact, and you are not concerned about anyone&#8217;s safety (which is when you call the police) you can contact the CARE team via a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/montclair-advocate.symplicity.com\/care_report\/index.php\/pid155878?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">student of concern form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> regarding any concerns you have about students.
