  {"id":268,"date":"2018-05-17T17:45:39","date_gmt":"2018-05-17T17:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/?page_id=268"},"modified":"2018-05-29T14:20:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T14:20:13","slug":"spotlight-news-briefs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/spring-2018\/spotlight-news-briefs\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight: News Briefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sprague Library: Home to Institutional Repository<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">ÌÇÐÄvlog Digital Commons, a new institutional repository managed by Sprague Library, preserves and showcases the University\u2019s research and creative works under one umbrella.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The repository (which can be accessed at <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcommons.montclair.edu\">digitalcommons.montclair.edu<\/a>) serves the interests of Montclair State \u2014 a national- and state-designated research university \u2014 by making the scholarly work of the University community easily discoverable through search engines in an open-access digital environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBy capturing the intellectual output of the University, the repository provides visibility and influence to a worldwide audience, which, in turn, opens up new avenues for further research and collaboration,\u201d says Sprague Library Research and Projects Specialist Karen Ramsden.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>STEM Pioneers<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/05\/020818_4420_CSAM-STEM-Pioneers.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/05\/020818_4420_CSAM-STEM-Pioneers.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"STEM Students in the \u201cturtle lab.\u201d\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">STEM Students in the \u201cturtle lab.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">The University\u2019s first cohort of STEM Pioneers \u2014 undeclared, first-year, first-generation students \u2014 are discovering the possibilities for majors in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The STEM Pioneers program expects to welcome about 75 new students in fall 2019. The program, developed by faculty members from the College of Science and Mathematics, in collaboration with the Research Academy for University Learning, is supported by a three-year, $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis has really opened my eyes to fields in science I didn\u2019t know existed,\u201d says Jose Castillo, a freshman from Bloomfield, N.J.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Professor Receives Physics Fellowship<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Associate Professor of Physics Marc Favata has been awarded a 2018 Simons Fellowship in theoretical physics by the Simons Foundation, giving him the opportunity to continue his cutting-edge research abroad for a year, working alongside fellow scholars in other parts of the world. Of the 12 scholars awarded Simons Fellowships for theoretical physics in 2018, Favata is the only honoree from a New Jersey higher education institution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The $108,000 grant will allow Favata to further his research in gravitational-wave astronomy, with the goal of discovering new areas that could be examined with the next generation of gravitational-wave experiments. He will visit Ewha Womans University and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute as well as the Albert Einstein Institute in Germany and the California Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is an incredibly exciting time to be working in gravitational-wave science,\u201d Favata says.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Recording Montclair Township\u2019s Diverse History<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Township of Montclair\u2019s founding, the Montclair History Center is capturing oral histories from those who call Montclair home \u2014 paying particular attention to its ethnically diverse populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With grant funding from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the Center tapped Anthropology Professor Chris Matthews to guide the project with the help of 16 students from his Historical Archaeology class, who have interviewed about 40 Montclair residents.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/05\/AlbrightKate-6761.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/05\/AlbrightKate-6761.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Student interviewing a Montclair resident.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students interviewed 40 Montclair residents for the project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe want to recognize what people have to share about the neighborhoods and communities they grew up in,\u201d he says. \u201cOf great interest were the African-American community, which has played a prominent and active part in Montclair\u2019s history, and the Italian- American community that first settled here around 1900.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sprague Library: Home to Institutional Repository ÌÇÐÄvlog Digital Commons, a new institutional repository managed by Sprague Library, preserves and showcases the University\u2019s research and creative works under one umbrella.
