  {"id":435,"date":"2019-05-15T20:24:09","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T20:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/?page_id=435"},"modified":"2019-05-16T13:43:14","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T13:43:14","slug":"studying-power-plants-effects-on-barnegat-bay-estuary","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/spring-2019\/studying-power-plants-effects-on-barnegat-bay-estuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Studying Power Plant\u2019s Effects on Barnegat Bay Estuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_437\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/05\/071117_6016_CSAM-Bologna-at-Aquarium.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/05\/071117_6016_CSAM-Bologna-at-Aquarium.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Bologna is among researchers studying the effects of the Oyster Creek Nuclear plant on jellyfish in Barnegat Bay.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Bologna is among researchers studying the effects of the Oyster Creek Nuclear plant on jellyfish in Barnegat Bay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Lacey, New Jersey, was the nation\u2019s oldest active nuclear power plant when it was powered down last fall, giving a team of Montclair State researchers a unique opportunity to assess the station\u2019s impact on the Barnegat Bay Estuary. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Biology professors <strong>Paul Bologna<\/strong>, <strong>John Gaynor<\/strong> and <strong>Robert Meredith<\/strong> have received $131,934 in grants from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for the first two years of a three-year project to study the profound impact they believe the station has had on the community structure of jellyfish in Barnegat Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to collect incredible data before and after the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant,\u201d says Bologna. \u201cIt\u2019s highly likely that the combined research and efforts will generate information relevant to many different power and industrial plants.\u201d For Meredith, the project also offers an unprecedented opportunity to conduct \u201ca mini experiment of global climate change and its potential impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the summer of 2018, Bologna and a team of undergraduate and graduate students collected, processed, identified and measured samples in the field. The organisms will be compared to those collected after the plant\u2019s shutdown. Gaynor and Meredith are using DNA analysis to identify any unknown organisms collected by Bologna and his students. Their efforts, according to Bologna, will essentially \u201cbar code\u201d the bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The professors will determine the impact of the plant on the bay by discovering \u2014 and pinpointing \u2014 differences between the types of organisms collected before and after the shutdown.
