Our latest feature upgrade is one of great importance for our campus community: Enhanced 911 or ‘e911’ location services.

This e911 solution will also enable softphone users to update their location when using the softphone application on their university PC, whether working remotely or using the softphone while in the office. Please note that since the softphone is running on your PC and not a physical phone on your office desk, softphone users will be required to provide their current location when they start up the softphone application or whenever they change physical location. If you use the softphone application, please see the attached screenshots or read the complete documentation here for instructions on how to enter your current location into the softphone application.

The e911 solution relies on accurate location information for every user. As such, please remember that all telecommunications equipment moves must be completed by IT Telecom engineers so that location data can be updated and maintained properly. If you require a phone equipment move, please email itservicedesk@montclair.edu, attention Telecom, and do not move the equipment yourself.

Community members may still contact University Police at 973-655-5222 for any concerns or questions.

Creating More Accessible Documents with SensusAccess /information-technology/2019/09/03/creating-more-accessible-documents-with-sensusaccess/ /information-technology/2019/09/03/creating-more-accessible-documents-with-sensusaccess/#respond Tue, 03 Sep 2019 19:02:20 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=13020 As part of the University’s continuing efforts to make documents more accessible, the University has recently implemented SensusAccess. Please remember that, consistent with the University Digital Accessibility policy, employees are expected to assure the accessibility of all documents or webpages generally available to our campus community via the web or via broadly distributed emails.
The service is now available and allows members of the University community to upload a document and be emailed back a version that is more accessible to persons with disabilities. Supported document types include Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, Text, HTML and various image file types.
Access the Convert Your Document Into A More Accessible Format webpage for additional information on how to start using SensusAccess.

Making Our Documents Accessible with SensusAccess /information-technology/2019/06/19/making-our-documents-accessible-with-sensusaccess/ /information-technology/2019/06/19/making-our-documents-accessible-with-sensusaccess/#respond Wed, 19 Jun 2019 20:03:23 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=12339 As part of the University’s commitment to provide access to digital content to all students, faculty, and staff, ÌÇÐÄvlog is licensing SensusAccess, a web based document remediation service. This new service is scheduled to be available in June 2019.

This self-service offering will allow users to convert their Word and PDF documents into a more accessible alternative format for users of assistive technology such as JAWS.

Additional information will be communicated just prior to the launch of this new service.

Making Your Emails Accessible /information-technology/2019/01/10/making-your-emails-accessible/ /information-technology/2019/01/10/making-your-emails-accessible/#respond Thu, 10 Jan 2019 16:06:21 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=10572 An important consideration for making emails accessible is to use simple text (e.g., no bold or italics) and refrain from using images whenever possible. If an image such as a photo or pdf is required, be sure to include what is conveyed in the image as text within the email so that those using assistive technologies such as screen readers can understand what is being communicated. As a general rule, keeping emails simple by making sure the content is formatted using easy to read fonts will increase the likelihood that everyone can access your message.

Launching the Digital Accessibility Initiative for Administrators /information-technology/2018/10/29/launching-the-digital-accessibility-initiative-for-administrators/ /information-technology/2018/10/29/launching-the-digital-accessibility-initiative-for-administrators/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 19:59:05 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=9727 Whereas the initial implementation of the University’s digital accessibility initiative focused on making instructional course content and Montclair.edu accessible, the initiative is now being extended to the administrative areas of the University. Specifically, three areas:Procurement, the Finance and Human Resources departments and Documents and forms that were not able to be made accessible during University Communications’ ongoing upgrade of our montclair.edu website. Over the next several months, the IT Division will work the Procurement Services department to strengthen areas of the University’s procurement process to include accessibility considerations where appropriate. In addition, outreach and training sessions will be conducted with key administrative functions to increase accessibility awareness and develop a plan for accommodating the accessibility needs of those who require access to HR and Finance related forms. Lastly, the IT Division will partner with Web Services to develop an inventory of all inaccessible documents that were not able to be migrated successfully.

Accessibility Day /information-technology/2018/09/14/accessibility-day/ /information-technology/2018/09/14/accessibility-day/#respond Fri, 14 Sep 2018 19:32:50 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=8251 The Instructional Technology & Design Services team (ITDS) will host another Accessibility Day event on September 19th in UN5009. This event will introduce participants to the University’s Digital Accessibility Initiative and the importance of their role in it. The sessions will focus on how to create accessible instructional material using MS Word, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, etc., as well as how to design an accessible Canvas course by incorporating tools such as Ally and the Canvas Accessibility Checker. Please go to the to register for one of these events.

Accessibility Tools in Canvas

Ally is a tool to assist faculty in making sure course documents are accessible in Canvas. It is now implemented and embedded in all FA18 courses in Canvas. Ally checks for accessibility in the existing and newly uploaded course files. To measure accessibility, Ally assigns each course file an accessibility score, represented by a number and a colored gauge which can be found next to your files. In addition, Ally generates alternative accessible formats including audio files. This tool provides a description of any accessibility issues and step-by-step help on how to improve them. Our Ally documentation can be helpful to learn about this tool.
