Our latest feature upgrade is one of great importance for our campus community: Enhanced 911 or ‘e911’ location services.

This e911 solution will also enable softphone users to update their location when using the softphone application on their university PC, whether working remotely or using the softphone while in the office. Please note that since the softphone is running on your PC and not a physical phone on your office desk, softphone users will be required to provide their current location when they start up the softphone application or whenever they change physical location. If you use the softphone application, please see the attached screenshots or read the complete documentation here for instructions on how to enter your current location into the softphone application.

The e911 solution relies on accurate location information for every user. As such, please remember that all telecommunications equipment moves must be completed by IT Telecom engineers so that location data can be updated and maintained properly. If you require a phone equipment move, please email itservicedesk@montclair.edu, attention Telecom, and do not move the equipment yourself.

Community members may still contact University Police at 973-655-5222 for any concerns or questions.

Networking Fiber Cabling Work /information-technology/2019/10/31/networking-fiber-cabling-work-2/ /information-technology/2019/10/31/networking-fiber-cabling-work-2/#respond Thu, 31 Oct 2019 12:40:23 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/information-technology/?p=13060 To Our Campus Community –
Information Technology will be migrating to our new network operations
center in College Hall between now and January 2020.

Building Migration Schedule for Fall 2019

November 11
Morehead Hall
November 18

November 25
Student Center

● Note All buildings will experience a brief (20 minute) network service interruption
when their network fiber cable(s) are migrated, but this will occur *after normal
business hours* and should not impact work or classes.

Key points:

1. All buildings will experience a brief (20 minute) network service
interruption when their network fiber cable(s) are migrated, but this will occur
*after normal business hours* and should not impact work or classes.
2. A very small number of buildings may require an extended network
service interruption. Users in those locations will be notified in advance
and we will try to schedule any interruptions for summer Fridays or
weekends to minimize user impact.
3. The migration schedule for July is attached. An online version will
be maintained on the IT web site (www.montclair.edu/information-technology)
under News and Events to track progress through the end of the year.

Additional details:

The migration involves physically re-routing hundreds of underground
fiber optic and copper cabling from buildings around campus into the new
College Hall location. For most buildings IT will avoid network outages
by utilizing alternate conduit pathways during the cable migration
process. These buildings will experience only a brief 20-minute
interruption of service after normal business hours to make final
connections.

In the few cases where an alternate pathway cannot be used, network and
IP telephone services may need to be disconnected while cable is
physically re-routed into the new location in College Hall. IT will
notify occupants of those buildings at least 2 weeks in advance and will
minimize potential impact by scheduling the outages during summer
Fridays and on weekends where possible. IT is also using 25Live as the
source of information for special events scheduled on campus and will
coordinate any planned outages around these events.

There is always the possibility, although unlikely, that the team could
encounter a surprise during cable re-routing and introduce an unplanned
network service interruption. In that unlikely event, IT expects to be
able to restore services within one hour.
