In describing Lori Katterhenry, who retired as director of Montclair State\u2019s Dance Division after 33 years this past spring, the term goes beyond artistic excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe leads with grace,\u201d says former student Eric Parra \u201917, who is now a professional dancer with the Lim\u00f3n Dance Company in Manhattan. \u201cShe will not stop until her students see in themselves what she sees in them. And for that I am infinitely grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\"><figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2019\/11\/lori-katterhenry.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2019\/11\/lori-katterhenry.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Lori Katterhenry\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSince my freshman year of school, Lori knew that I needed to perform, I needed to be challenged, and that I would need help,\u201d says Parra. \u201cShe was always there to make sure that all was going well. Luckily for me, she was also my academic advisor. Trips to her office were never just about what my next semester courses would be. They also were about how I was feeling, what my summer was looking like, what my plans for the future were, what questions I needed answers for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parra and others cited Katterhenry\u2019s nurturing nature and the loving and creative family environment she fostered \u2013 bringing life to Life Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my professor, my mentor and now my very dear friend,\u201d says Maureen Glennon Clayton \u201991, who ultimately shared a professorship with Katterhenry at the University. \u201cLori was always so supportive. She always called my class \u2018her kids.\u2019 I really felt like we were so tight as a family at Montclair State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glennon Clayton also praised Katterhenry\u2019s work as a choreographer, which she says conveys a witty, even comic bent at times. \u201cWhat I love about her is that she always made me laugh and what I love even more is that I can make her laugh,\u201d says Glennon Clayton.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Sparks \u201994, director of administration in the College of the Arts, met Katterhenry in 1985. As a mother of two who needed to raise her children while earning her degree, she appreciated that Katterhenry \u201ccreated an environment where a non-traditional student could thrive.\u201d At 28, Sparks says she also realized that she was probably not going to be one of the many Montclair State students who embarked on a professional career as a dancer \u2013 but that didn\u2019t matter to Katterhenry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used her abilities to include those considered on the fringe or underrepresented,\u201d says Sparks. \u201cLori gave students permission to live their dream at whatever level they could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe found a place for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sparks says that even though she and Katterhenry went on to become colleagues and together pioneered programs such as <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/aboutthecollege\/programming-services-units\/arts-and-health-initiatives\/the-body-talks\/\">The Body Talks<\/a><\/u>, the Arts &amp; Healing Institute and The Body Shop, \u201cShe considers me a colleague but I always consider her a mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLori always knew that the job doesn\u2019t end at the door to the studio,\u201d says Sparks. \u201cShe has a great desire to use the arts as a powerful tool for transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could go on all day,\u201d says Sparks. \u201cI can\u2019t say enough good things about her.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cSince my freshman year of school, Lori knew that I needed to perform, I needed to be challenged, and that I would need help,\u201d says Parra. \u201cShe was always there to make sure that all was going well.
