  {"id":24,"date":"2017-10-20T18:39:55","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T18:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www-dev.montclair.edu\/lasting-lessons\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2017-10-20T18:39:55","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T18:39:55","slug":"waters","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/lasting-lessons\/waters\/","title":{"rendered":"Gregory Waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p>Director,<br \/>\nHonors Program<\/p>\n<p>English professor and Honors Program Director Gregory Waters, who retires this summer, taught, advised and inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of students, becoming a mentor and friend to many in his 33 years at Montclair State. \u201cI remember Dr. Waters as the most empathetic and compassionate professor I have ever had,\u201d recalls Jennifer Ocampo \u201913. \u201cNot only did he create a safe space where I always felt comfortable being myself, but he also encouraged me and made me feel like I mattered and belonged.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/040914_7836_CHSS-Honors-English.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/040914_7836_CHSS-Honors-English.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Gregory Waters in Honors class\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>A respected administrator as well as teacher, Waters has served in many capacities including senior roles in the Provost\u2019s Office, Advancement, and even for a time as Interim President. \u201cDr. Waters was my English professor, advisor and Honors Program director,\u201d says Jaclyn Gass \u201917. \u201cHe built my confidence as a writer and prospective educator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an advisor and mentor, Waters has left a \u200clasting impression on many of his students. \u201cDr. Waters taught me the value of taking risks in academic, professional and personal life,\u201d says Rachel Belsky \u201918. \u201cHe has inspired me to challenge myself in classes, take on new opportunities and study abroad in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some, Waters was an invaluable resource both at Montclair State and in their post-graduate pursuits. \u201cHis passion for teaching and infectious enthusiasm for helping others inspired me to become the teacher that I am today,\u201d says Ellen Gianakis \u201913.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned for his compassion and caring for his students, Waters has been a strong presence in the lives of many. \u201cAs an out-of-state student, Dr. Waters is like second family to me. He always makes sure to check in on me, ask about my family, and keep abreast of my academic success,\u201d says Megan Hasse \u201918.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years, students have routinely sought out Waters\u2019 advice. \u201cHe is one of the most kind-hearted and caring faculty members at Montclair State, which is why his office is typically flooded with students who are looking for advice, myself included,\u201d says Stephen Blazejewski \u201917.<\/p>\n<p>Noah Befeler \u201917 agrees: \u201cDr. Waters is one of the most kind and caring professors I&#8217;ve ever had the pleasure of working with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since joining Montclair State in 1984, Waters has taught a variety of English and literature courses with passion and inspiration. \u201cHis vast knowledge of and appreciation for history and literature has consistently inspired me to want to learn and take in as much as I possibly can,\u201d says Valerie Jaretzky \u201919.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Shoykhet \u201918 echoes that sentiment. \u201cProfessor Waters\u2019 love of literature and language is inspiring, and in his teaching, he masterfully demonstrates meaning in literary works.
