  {"id":44,"date":"2017-10-20T18:48:43","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T18:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www-dev.montclair.edu\/lasting-lessons\/?page_id=44"},"modified":"2017-10-20T18:48:43","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T18:48:43","slug":"marilyn-tayler","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/lasting-lessons\/marilyn-tayler\/","title":{"rendered":"Marilyn Tayler"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p>When she arrived at Montclair State more than 35 years ago, Professor Marilyn Tayler, the coordinator of the Jurisprudence Program and the University\u2019s pre-law advisor, didn\u2019t start in the Department of Political Science and Law. \u201cI came to Montclair State in 1975 as an assistant professor of Spanish,\u201d she says, \u201ca newly minted PhD specializing in Latin American Literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she earned a JD from Seton Hall University and has taught more than 20 different undergraduate and graduate courses\u2014often developing the courses herself\u2014and advised students in Spanish, paralegal studies, legal studies, justice studies, political science jurisprudence and pre-law. Tayler takes her role as advisor very seriously: \u201cAdvising, to me, has always meant \u2018making a difference\u2019\u2014motivating, encouraging, inspiring and challenging students to do and be their very best.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/030513_2802_TaylerM.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/030513_2802_TaylerM.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Marilyn Tayler in front of wall of framed diplomas\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Tayler\u2019s dedication to advising and mentoring has made a difference in the lives countless former students. \u201cShe always makes herself available to any student who needs guidance and gives individualized attention to everyone,\u201d says Dorothy Kenney \u201909, a former student who recently graduated from Rutgers Law School. \u201cI am happy to call Dr. Tayler not only a mentor but a true friend as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alireza \u201cAli\u201d Abedin \u201909 who graduated from Rutgers Law School with Kenney agrees: \u201cShe is a mentor in the truest sense of the word, and her guidance and counseling surely does not end once her \u2018kids\u2019 graduate. To say that she cares is an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tayler\u2019s exemplary commitment to her teaching and advising has not gone unnoticed by the University either. She has received many awards from Montclair State including the Outstanding Academic Advising Award (2010), the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean\u2019s Recognition Award for Teaching (2008), the University\u2019s Distinguished Teacher Award (2005), the University\u2019s Outstanding Faculty Award (1995), the Student Government Association Excellence in Education Award (1995), the Educational Opportunity Fund Service Award (1986 and 1989) and Montclair State Merit Awards (1982 and 1987).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI consider student mentoring to be a fundamental aspect of my role as a teacher,\u201d says Tayler. \u201cThat one-to-one relationship\u2026often endures for many years after the student leaves my classes.
