Caracciolo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p>\u200cProfessor Emeritus,<br \/>\nCommunication Sciences and Disorders<\/p>\n<p>A respected and admired professor who retired in 2002 after 39 years at Montclair State, Professor Emeritus Gerard \u201cJerry\u201d Caracciolo is still active in the field of communication sciences and disorders and continues to consult with others in the field, several of whom are former students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Caracciolo is an inspiration as a lifelong learner. I first met him as a student and now for many years have had the privilege of working with him,\u201d says Elizabeth Dux \u201973, \u201980 MA. \u201cHe instilled in me the importance of being involved with colleagues, to join committees, to reach out to legislators \u2013 that our profession was much more than just a job. I will be forever grateful for his guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/033116_3740_Gerard-Caracciolo.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/lasting-lessons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/10\/033116_3740_Gerard-Caracciolo.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Gerard Caracciolo with arms crossed\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>A passionate teacher and mentor, Caracciolo inspired many of his students to follow in his footsteps. \u201cI wanted to be \u2018just like him,\u2019 so I pursued the best field there is \u2013 communication sciences and disorders,\u201d says Lorraine Adcox \u201975. \u201cThanks to his influence, I have been a speech-language pathologist for 40 years, and have loved every minute of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nanc Fellerman-Yahr \u201970 also credits Caracciolo\u2019s influence for her long career in the field. \u201cIn 1967, 10 students from the new Liberal Arts program observed Dr. Caracciolo through the new state-of-the-art observation room at Montclair State,\u201d she recalls. \u201cHe was working with a young child. I knew at that moment what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. He is my mentor and friend and has been there for me for my 46-year career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caracciolo, who earned his doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University, considers clinical supervision to be a critical aspect of student training and continues to be involved in it at the professional level. \u201cHis supervision in our Clinical Practicum was superb,\u201d recalls Jacqueline Ferrara. \u201cHe taught methods courses that provided real techniques in the provision of speech pathology. I continue to use techniques in my daily work that I learned from Mr. Caracciolo all those years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recipient of numerous awards and honors, including being a Governor appointee to the New Jersey Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee, Caracciolo is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a longtime board member and current president of the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Caracciolo was more than a professor; he was a mentor to me as well as many of his students, even long after we graduated from the program,\u201d says Arlene Rubin Helcman \u201980. \u201cHe was a role model for excellence in the field of communication sciences and disorders, demonstrating dedication and passion for the field, and its clients and students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the many other former students grateful for Caracciolo\u2019s guidance are Nancy G. Schneider \u201981 and Kathleen Adler \u201967. \u201cDr. Caracciolo is a scholar, a gentlemen and a truly memorable professor,\u201d says Schneider. \u201cI am honored to have studied under him\u2026thank you Jerry!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s a bit of what I learned from my mentor and good friend, Dr. Caracciolo: <em>Be creative<\/em>, be observant, <em>be creative<\/em>, be caring, <em>be creative<\/em>,\u201d adds Adler. \u201cWhat a gift!
