Sprague Library is licensing more e-books and streaming media, and our course reserves materials will be available to students mostly online. However, we still have a collection of print reserves materials as many print books, particularly textbooks, are not for sale to libraries as e-books, even if they are available to individuals.

Whenever possible, the Library encourages instructors to assign materials already freely available online or licensed through the  to help minimize Montclair students’ textbook expenses. Sprague Librarians can assist instructors in locating textbook alternatives from both existing library e-resources and (OER), and Access Services staff can assist with scanning and placing limited selections of physical material held by the library or provided by instructors through electronic reserves into your Canvas course.

Making course materials (including textbooks, book chapters, articles, videos, and more) available for free through the library is wonderfully convenient, and it can help ease any financial strain they might be facing.

For the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sprague Library is licensing more e-books and streaming media, and our course reserves materials will be available to students mostly online. However, many print books, particularly textbooks, are not for sale to libraries as e-books, even if they are available to individuals. Sprague Library is open 7 days per week during the Spring semester, and students may borrow our print reserves books for use within the Library during our open hours.

Whenever possible, the Library encourages instructors to assign materials already freely available online or licensed through the library catalog () to help minimize Montclair students’ textbook expenses. Sprague Librarians can assist instructors in locating textbook alternatives from both existing library e-resources and open educational resources (OER), and Access Services staff can assist with scanning and placing limited selections of physical material held by the library or provided by instructors through electronic reserves into your Canvas course.

Fall Course Reserves /library/2020/08/04/fall-course-reserves/ /library/2020/08/04/fall-course-reserves/#respond Tue, 04 Aug 2020 21:17:38 +0000 http://www.montclair.edu/library/?p=1395 For the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sprague Library is licensing more e-books and streaming media, and its course reserves materials will be available to students mostly online. However, many print books, particularly textbooks, are not for sale to libraries as e-books, even if they are available to individuals. Therefore, instructors are encouraged to request course reserves for Fall ’20 as soon as possible.

Normally, print books are available for a two-hour loan period through the Library’s Print Reserves collection. Unfortunately, the Library’s ability to provide this service is limited during the pandemic because the Library has adopted a 96-hour quarantine period for handling print or physical materials, based on the Reopening Archives, Libraries and Museums (REALM) Project’s research-supported guidelines.  The REALM COVID-19 Research Project is being conducted by the global library cooperative OCLC, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and the nonprofit applied science and technology development company Battelle.

Search course reserves to see if your course materials are available online in an electronic format. Some reserves materials have been scanned and uploaded into Canvas Courses. Check out our to see if your textbook is available on another site.

Reserves for Faculty

We are currently processing Reserves requests for Summer and Fall courses. Use the form to submit your request. Please keep in mind the following:

  • The library building is closed indefinitely and there is no access to our physical collections. Sprague Library will attempt to provide the desired reserve item in an electronic format. Please be aware that this will not be possible in all cases, and an alternate item may be necessary. If we cannot find materials for your course in an electronic format, you can use the service and we will assist you in locating suitable materials in the Library’s collections of online resources.
  • Personal copies — We are not accepting personal copies of books or other materials to place on Reserve at this time.
  • eReserves — For articles and book chapters we encourage you to see if the full text is available from a library-owned resource and use the to allow students to access those items within your Canvas Course.
  • Important: Not sure if your course reserves items from last Fall are still active? Check the   — search by your name, course title, or course number, and let us know if we need to renew your course for Fall 2020.

Multimedia Reserves

  • Any streaming video that the library currently owns is available for use as a Course Reserve item. You may use to allow students to access those items within your Canvas Course.
  • For subscription video collections you can access online, please browse the located on the Library’s Database page.  A can also be found there.
  • If you need to locate an individual streaming video or audio recording, we recommend that you search the, or you can use the service and we will assist you. New streaming materials can be requested for purchase by completing the form.
