  {"id":242,"date":"2024-01-11T14:21:28","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T14:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/?page_id=242"},"modified":"2024-01-11T14:21:28","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T14:21:28","slug":"game-on-emma-kaptein-13","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/magazine\/winter-2024\/game-on-emma-kaptein-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Game On: Emma Kaptein &#8217;13"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2023\/12\/Alumni-Profiles-02_Kaptein-01.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/275\/2023\/12\/Alumni-Profiles-02_Kaptein-01.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Emma Kaptein wearing a NY Giants knitted hat\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>New York Giants social media manager Emma Kaptein \u201913 completed her broadcasting degree on the cusp of seismic changes in the industry. \u201cThe media role has changed dramatically in the last 10 years,\u201d Kaptein says, emphasizing that TikTok and Instagram reels didn\u2019t exist when she was in school. \u201cYou have to be willing to adapt,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s now in her 11th season with the franchise, keeping pace with the dynamic field. \u201cIt is an amazing organization,\u201d she says. \u201cI worked hard to lock in my internship there and did everything I could to stay beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pivotal internship, which she landed in her junior year at Montclair, opened the door to her career and united her passions for sports \u2013 in particular football \u2013 and broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>Putting into play a comprehensive digital marketing program, Kaptein is leading the team\u2019s social media strategy on seven digital platforms, with the help of a social media coordinator and the support of as many as 25 production and design professionals. \u201cWe have weekly brainstorming meetings where everyone, from interns on up, gets to pitch new ideas,\u201d she says. \u201cWe also engage a wide range of influencers to create additional content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On game days, however, it is Kaptein, the social media coordinator and the social media intern in charge of posts. \u201cIt gets pretty intense,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the career services support she received at Montclair \u2013 especially when she was pursuing internships \u2013 and the leadership skills she gained as a member of Theta Kappa Chi, Kaptein is grateful for the hands-on projects assigned in her classes. \u201cI wasn\u2019t able to study digital marketing \u2013 it wasn\u2019t even a thing yet \u2013 but I learned how to dig in and get things done,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>It is a perspective that Kaptein now shares with current Montclair students through her work as a volunteer mentor for the School of Communication and Media. \u201cI\u2019m in my second year as a mentor,\u201d she says. \u201cI help students set goals and give them guidance as they build their resumes.
