Dr. Erell Germia and Dr. Alfred Limbere earned their PhDs in Mathematics Education at the Spring 2023 Commencement

Dr. Alfred Limbere Successfully Defends Dissertation

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Alfred Limbere for successfully defending his dissertation during the summer of 2022! The title of his dissertation is “Using Teacher Noticing and Video-Mediated Professional Learning to Develop Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge for Teaching the Derivative.”

Alfred’s dissertation committee consisted of mathematics education professors Drs. Steven Greenstein, Mika Munakata, and Joseph DiNapoli. Alfred did a fantastic job in his work and his findings will help prepare future teachers of calculus for years to come. Congratulations, Dr. Limbere!

Dr. Erell Germia successfully defends her dissertation

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Erell Germia for successfully defending her dissertation in July! The title of her dissertation is “Investigating Elementary School Students’ Reasoning about Dynamic Angles.” Her dissertation committee consisted of Drs. Panorkou (chair), DiNapoli, Munakata, and Paoletti. We have been impressed by all the work Erell put in her research and the writing of her dissertation.

For those you don’t know, Erell accepted a tenured-track position as an Assistant Professor at Kean University! She starts her new appointment on September 1st.

We are really proud of you Dr. Germia!

John O’Meara completes his masters and returns for his PhD

John O’Meara graduated this past spring with a Master of Science in Mathematics. He chose the Mathematics Education concentration as a way to continue to refine his skills as a mathematician and remain on the cutting edge of education and mathematical discourse in the classroom. John will be continuing to expand upon his current research and his ever-growing knowledge as he returns to Montclair this fall as a student in the Mathematics Education Ph.D. program. Next stop, Dr. O’Meara!

Congratulations to Gurkan Kose, Jessica Nuzzi, and Ceire Monahan who all celebrated earning their PhDs in Mathematics Education alongside their faculty advisors during a June 2021 commencement ceremony. The department is so proud of each of them. Well done Dr. Kose, Dr. Nuzzi, and Dr. Monahan on this amazing accomplishment. You all deserve it!
