The Department of Mathematics was represented by 3 students:

  • Emmalie Foti mentored by Dr. Deepak Bal who presented the poster titled “Ramsey Theory for Permutation Patterns”
  • Rocco Julian mentored by Dr. Jonathan Cutler who presented the poster titled “A Nordhaus-Gaddum inequality for the number of dominating sets in a graph”
  • Miguel Rodriguez Zegarra mentored by Dr. Bogdan Nita who presented the poster titled “Math and Music, mathematical transformations in Bach’s compositions”

If you are majoring in Mathematics or Math Education and are curious about research, please reach out and engage in conversations with the faculty in our Department.

Scholarship Opportunity for Prospective Elementary Math Teachers /mathematics/2022/10/11/scholarship-opportunity-for-prospective-elementary-math-teachers/ /mathematics/2022/10/11/scholarship-opportunity-for-prospective-elementary-math-teachers/#respond Tue, 11 Oct 2022 15:54:08 +0000 /mathematics/?p=207969 the Noyce@Montclair Mathematics Scholarship Program is open to students who are enrolled in the B.S. Math degree with K-6 certification and who also meet other eligibility requirements. Many of our math majors are planning to teach at the high school level, but you may want to consider teaching at the elementary level where students’ mathematical foundations are built, at least for a few years.

The scholarships cover junior and senior years of tuition plus a small stipend. In exchange for each year of the scholarship you receive, you must agree to work for two years in a high-needs school. In addition to receiving tuition, you’ll be earning a math degree and teaching at the elementary level. Elementary teachers with those credentials are rare, which means you’d be a very attractive candidate when it comes time to looking for teaching positions. And if you’re interested, you’re likely to move up relatively quickly in your career toward leadership positions like being a math coach or a district math supervisor.

Read more about the scholarship program and see video testimonials of past recipients on the website. Faculty advisors Drs. Steven Greenstein and Joseph DiNapoli are happy to meet with anyone with questions about the scholarship. You can contact them via email at mathnoyce@montclair.edu.

An Update on the Noyce Scholarship Program /mathematics/2022/02/24/an-update-on-the-noyce-scholarship-program/ /mathematics/2022/02/24/an-update-on-the-noyce-scholarship-program/#respond Thu, 24 Feb 2022 21:08:49 +0000 /mathematics/?p=207773 The Noyce Scholarship Program aims to prepare effective elementary mathematics teachers to change the world by teaching elementary-level mathematics in high-need communities. Caitlin recently graduated and just started a teaching position at Ola Edwards Elementary School.

During the convening, scholars discussed their latest experiences including spending time in classrooms during student teaching or Clinical I and II placements, tutoring peers for the Math Praxis Exam, conducting original research as part of their MATH 491: Mathematics Education Research class, and interviewing for teaching jobs. Additionally, the convening was catered by Chipotle, which was fantastic! If you are interested in becoming a Noyce Scholar at MSU, which includes a financial scholarship, stipend, and a promise to work for 2-4 years in a high-needs school upon graduation, please .
