I\u2019m here for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2705 \u201cIt\u2019s okay to ask for help\u2014would you like to connect with campus resources together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2705 \u201cI care about you, and your well-being matters more than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>What Not to Say<\/h3>\n<p>Avoid language that minimizes or dismisses their feelings.<\/p>\n<p>\u274c \u201cJust toughen up\u2014everyone goes through this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u274c \u201cIt\u2019s not that big of a deal; you\u2019ll get over it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u274c \u201cYou have nothing to be stressed about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u274c \u201cOther students have it worse, so you should be grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u274c \u201cYou\u2019re just being dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>If You\u2019re Concerned About Their Safety<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re worried about a student, it\u2019s better to ask and act than to wait. Trust your instincts\u2014if something feels wrong, take it seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Ask directly but gently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cSometimes when people feel this way, they think about harming themselves. Is that something you\u2019ve been thinking about?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stay with them until they are connected to help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contact CAPS or call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (U.S.).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-step\"><div class=\"prpl-step-number\"><span class=\"label-part\">Step<\/span> <span class=\"number-part\">3<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-step-content\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Refer to CARE<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>When and how to submit a <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/montclair-advocate.symplicity.com\/care_report\/index.php\/pid128784\" target=\"_blank\">CARE Referral Form<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you notice a student struggling\u2014academically, emotionally, socially, or personally\u2014you don\u2019t need to handle it alone. Submitting a CARE Referral Form allows our team to reach out, provide support, and connect the student to the right resources. A referral is not a punishment; it\u2019s a way to help students succeed and feel supported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not sure if you should refer? <\/strong>Use our simple flowchart: \u201cShould I Refer or Report?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediate safety concern? (danger to self or others) \u2192 Call campus police (5222) or 911.<\/li>\n<li>Student needs support but is not in crisis? \u2192 Submit a CARE Referral.<\/li>\n<li>Unsure? \u2192 Consult with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/montclair-cares\/care-team\/\">CARE Team member<\/a> first.
