  {"id":211709,"date":"2020-05-12T09:26:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T13:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=211709"},"modified":"2020-05-15T15:44:17","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T19:44:17","slug":"acing-the-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2020\/05\/12\/acing-the-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Acing the Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Julia Dondero \u201914 has been working behind-the-scenes to bring a new at-home self-collection kit for LabCorp\u2019s COVID-19 diagnostic test<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into the hands of the health-care workers and first responders who need it the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dondero leads the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">molecular diagnostics department at LabCorp\u2019s Raritan, New Jersey, lab, where she was able to rapidly scale up and validate an at-home collection kit that was the first authorized for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMaybe it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m a nerd who is into biology, but when I first learned about the coronavirus, I immediately thought, \u2018I have a feeling a few months from now, I&#8217;m going to be testing this by the thousands.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the pandemic intensified with calls for more COVID-19 testing, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dondero has worked around the clock, overseeing the at-home collection kit&#8217;s validation on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">various platforms and running samples to ensure the accuracy of results at multiple test sites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEvery day we&#8217;d get more information, better information, more sample types, a better understanding of the accuracy of the tests,\u201d she says. \u201cI have never seen anything grow this quickly before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On May 1, 2020, the at-home collection kits became available to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">health-care workers and first responders <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who may have been exposed to the virus or have coronavirus symptoms.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are now able to use at home a Q-tip-style cotton nasal swab to collect a fluid sample, which is then mailed to a lab for testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The FDA worked with LabCorp to ensure that results are as accurate as samples collected at a doctor&#8217;s office, hospital or other testing site. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Self-sampling sidesteps the need for a clinician to perform the test, reducing their exposure to symptomatic patients. It also frees up personal protective equipment, which is in short supply. (Like all other COVID-19 tests on the market, the FDA authorized the test under its emergency use rules.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LabCorp has released about 300,000 results, tests for the virus coming from the new at-home kits and hospitals, Dondero says.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_211710\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/fullsizeoutput_8801.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/fullsizeoutput_8801.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Julia Dondero\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Dondero \u201914 analyzes COVID-19 test results at LabCorp using a manual platform. (Photo by Meghan Fratesi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dondero\u2019s contribution is the type of work that often goes unnoticed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA lot of times we get sidelined or hear only the negatives about the lack of testing,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it&#8217;s nice that recently I&#8217;ve seen a lot of us being recognized as our testing has ramped up across the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The spotlight shined on Dondero in April when the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA) featured her during Laboratory Professionals Week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ACLA shared: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJulia has led the molecular diagnostics department at LabCorp\u2019s Raritan, New Jersey, lab over the last several weeks with technical expertise and a calm disposition during a tense and trying time. Her admirable leadership and dedication to patient care enabled LabCorp to validate the company\u2019s COVID-19 assay on three instruments in an extremely short period of time, while also supervising and training molecular employees and many additional volunteers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_211713\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/062413_5386_Jellyfish-Research.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/062413_5386_Jellyfish-Research.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Julia Dondero\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Dondero, right, while a student at Montclair State, extracts DNA samples in the University\u2019s laminar flow hood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">News of Dondero\u2019s success reached Biology Professor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John Gaynor, who mentored Dondero when she was an undergraduate student doing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Molecular Biology research <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at ÌÇÐÄvlog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I heard that she was instrumental in the initial development of coronavirus testing at LabCorp, I was not surprised. She has always been meticulous and detail oriented \u2013 just the kind of individual you want doing that work,\u201d Gaynor says. \u201cIt makes me feel confident knowing that there are good scientists out there like Julia \u2013 that we trained at Montclair State \u2013 doing this important work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While at Montclair State, Dondero assisted Gaynor and Biology Professor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Paul Bologna on a grant-supported project from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to study the jellyfish of Barnegat Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bologna\u2019s lab does the field collection and ecological work, Gaynor\u2019s lab does the molecular work, \u201cprimarily DNA extractions, PCR and DNA sequence analysis to identify unknown organisms,\u201d Gaynor says. \u201cAlthough Julia started doing the molecular work in my lab, she also wanted to experience the field component side. So, she started volunteering to work on the boat collecting samples and making measurements of water quality. Julia was a fast learner and very enthusiastic about the science.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her work is now far different from the study of jellyfish at the Jersey Shore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy department usually handles chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes simplex, HIV and hepatitis C,\u201d Dondero says. \u201cWe&#8217;re used to pipetting something that&#8217;s contagious. We already follow best practices for proper PPE. We always wear gloves, a lab coat, face shield or work under a hood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She says she\u2019s taking extra precautions with the easily transmissible coronavirus: \u201cWhen I get home, I don\u2019t take any chances.
