  {"id":217934,"date":"2022-04-27T10:04:07","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T14:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/?p=217934"},"modified":"2022-04-27T10:12:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T14:12:59","slug":"celebrating-survival-and-triumph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/newscenter\/2022\/04\/27\/celebrating-survival-and-triumph\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Survival and Triumph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a celebration of their parents, brothers Mark and Bernard Ravina along with ÌÇÐÄvlog hosted a special screening of the award-winning documentary, <em>An Inconvenient Time<\/em>, that captures their mother Ruth\u2019s remarkable story in surviving the Holocaust. The April 10 event in the School of Communication and Media\u2019s Presentation Hall drew close to 100 attendees.<br \/>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><br \/>\nRuth, who was two years old when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, says she was born in \u201can inconvenient time.\u201d Living through three concentration camps by the age of seven, Ruth was the only survivor of her kindergarten class. In the compelling documentary, Ruth shares her story of survival and triumph, recalling the resilient people and surreal twists of fate that enabled her to survive.\n<p>\u201cWe had heard this story throughout our life, but the approach of the film is a true accomplishment in capturing the truth and bringing it to life,\u201d says Mark Ravina, a professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of adversity, our parents, Ruth and Oscar, surrounded themselves with music and used music as a way to inspire and help,\u201d says Bernard Ravina, MD, who serves as chief medical officer at Praxis Medicines. <\/p><\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/2022_04_10_0014_MSU_Ravina-scaled.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/2022_04_10_0014_MSU_Ravina-scaled.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brothers Mark (left) and Bernard, with their mother, Ruth Ravina at the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/p><\/div><br \/>\n\u201cOur parents were a team, and in this year of our mother\u2019s 85th birthday, we wanted to honor her strength and all the love and support she brought to our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Music as inspiration<\/h2>\n<p>Oscar Ravina was a renowned violinist and beloved professor at Montclair, whose stellar career spanned four decades as a member of the New York Philharmonic, concertmaster of the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York and performing with other prestigious chamber music ensembles. His passion for music drove his desire to inspire young musicians and he taught at Montclair for more than 25 years where he was named professor emeritus. After his passing in 2010, students and colleagues honored his memory by establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/crowdfund.montclair.edu\/project\/30665\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award<\/a> at ÌÇÐÄvlog, which provides scholarship support for talented student musicians, some of whom are the first in their families to attend college.  <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to generous support of friends, family, colleagues and event attendees, the scholarship fund has grown to more than $100,000 and will ensure that future generations of music students can develop their talent and carry on the \u201cgorgeous sound\u201d that defined Oscar Ravina.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Denton Moreland, a violist and scholarship recipient, articulated the impact of support: \u201cOn behalf of all the scholarship recipients, I thank you for the spirit of benevolence that is changing our lives. I am majoring in Music Education, so everything I\u2019ve learned and Ruth\u2019s life story will live on in me and all my students going forward.\u201d Moreland has received generous scholarship support through the Ravina Talent Award, along with others including the Reps-Freeman Scholarship in Music and Equity, established by Tamara Reps Freeman DMA, a Holocaust ethnomusicologist and adjunct faculty coaching the graduate resident quartet at the John J. Cali School of Music.<\/p>\n<p>A student of Oscar Ravina\u2019s, Freeman \u201991 MA, is a concert violinist and violist and was part of the evening\u2019s program, playing the children\u2019s song <em>Oifn Pripitchik (By the Fireplace)<\/em> on her 1935 Joseph Bausch viola, a Holocaust relic.<\/p>\n<h2>Telling the story<\/h2>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><br \/>\n<em>An Inconvenient Time<\/em> was directed and produced by Denny Klein, who was inspired by Ruth to return to his avocation as a filmmaker. Klein and his wife, Cathy, met Ruth when their daughters participated in the \u201cTwin with a Survivor\u201d program at the Holocaust Council and were paired with her.\n<p>\u201cI am so fortunate to have been able to meet Ruth Ravina and her family. She has changed my life in a profound way,\u201d says Klein.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary to capture Ruth\u2019s odyssey and \u201chero\u2019s journey\u201d through the Holocaust, was recorded over five years and features Ruth in her own words.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan Taylor \u201917, who started working on the project while completing her degree at Montclair, served as associate producer and editor.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\"><figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/2022_04_12_0450_MSU_Ravina-scaled.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/04\/2022_04_12_0450_MSU_Ravina-scaled.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruth Ravina, holding flowers, with scholarship recipient Denton Moreland (center), and Morgan Taylor, an alumna and documentary editor.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/p><\/div><br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m in awe of the international recognition and reception of the film by people from all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Ruth\u2019s story is a story of humanity,\u201d says Taylor. \u201cRuth inspires me\u2026. As filmmakers, we\u2019ve taken on the mantle to share Ruth\u2019s story with the world for generations to come. May we all continue to tell the stories of the Holocaust and \u2018never forget.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program included a question-and-answer session with Mark and Bernard Ravina, along with Klein, Taylor and Benjamin Lapp, PhD, associate professor at Montclair who specializes in modern European history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing and the world we create is very much to honor the people who came before us and had their family lines cut short,\u201d shared ÌÇÐÄvlog President Jonathan Koppell. \u201cI\u2019m very excited to be part of this event\u2026 to honor the Ravina family\u2019s powerful legacy &#8230; and I thank you for supporting this scholarship and sharing this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To close the evening, guests honored Ruth by singing \u201cHappy Birthday,\u201d and celebrating with coffee and birthday cake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have waited for years for someone who was willing to tell the story, without embellishing\u2026just the way it was,\u201d says Ruth. \u201cPlease remember, sometimes, it only takes a tiny thing to make a difference\u2026so be kind, even when it\u2019s not comfortable to be kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/crowdfund.montclair.edu\/project\/30665\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award<\/a> to donate to the scholarship fund.<\/p>\n<p><em>An Inconvenient Time<\/em> is achieving awards and accolades across the United States and internationally at film festivals.
