Attackers are sending fake calendar invitations that reference <strong data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"478\">PayPal, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, invoices, or overdue payments<\/strong>. These invites often look legitimate and may even include links that lead to malicious websites.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"774\">Even if you don\u2019t click anything, these invitations can clutter your calendar and put your personal information at risk. It\u2019s important to know how to manage these invites and protect yourself.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"779\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"823\"><strong data-start=\"784\" data-end=\"823\">How to Protect Your Google Calendar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"865\">1. Change Your Calendar Settings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"866\" data-end=\"941\">To prevent unknown invites from automatically appearing on your calendar:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"1164\">\n<li data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"987\">\n<p data-start=\"946\" data-end=\"987\">Open <strong data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"970\">Google Calendar<\/strong> on a computer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1045\">\n<p data-start=\"991\" data-end=\"1045\">Click the <strong data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1042\">gear icon \u2192 Settings \u2192 Event settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1164\">\n<p data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1103\">Find <strong data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1089\">\u201cAutomatically add invitations\u201d<\/strong> under <strong>&#8220;Add invitation to my calendar&#8221;<\/strong> and select: <strong><em data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1162\">No, only show invitations to which I have responded<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1245\">This ensures that spam invitations won\u2019t automatically appear on your calendar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1245\"><strong>Disclaimer:<\/strong> By selecting \u201cNo, only show invitations to which I have responded,\u201d <strong>new calendar invitations will not appear automatically on your calendar<\/strong>. You will only see events after you have accepted or responded to the invitation. This may cause you to miss or overlook pending invitations if you do not review them manually in your inbox. Be sure to check your email or invitation list regularly to avoid missing important events.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1252\" data-end=\"1283\"><strong data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1283\">2. Adjust Notifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1475\">\n<li data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1391\">\n<p data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1391\">In <strong data-start=\"1290\" data-end=\"1335\">Settings \u2192 Event settings \u2192 Notifications<\/strong>, you can turn off notifications for external invites.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1475\">\n<p data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1475\">This helps reduce the chance of accidentally interacting with suspicious events.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer: <\/strong>If you turn off notifications for external invites, you <strong>will not receive alerts when someone outside your organization sends you a calendar invitation<\/strong>. You may miss new meeting requests unless you check your calendar or email regularly.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1527\"><strong data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1527\">3. How to Identify Suspicious Invites<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1561\">Watch for calendar events that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1562\" data-end=\"1600\">\n<p data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1600\">Come from unknown email addresses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1667\">\n<p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1667\">Mention cryptocurrency, PayPal, invoices, or overdue payments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1726\">\n<p data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1726\">Include links or attachments that ask for credentials.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<p data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1783\">Include a <strong data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1780\">phone number in the event description<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1562\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<li data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<p data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1783\"><strong data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1821\">Why attackers add phone numbers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phishers often include a phone number to make the invite look more legitimate and urgent. They want you to call the number for \u201cbilling\u201d or \u201cverification,\u201d but this is a <strong data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2023\">social engineering tactic<\/strong> designed to gain access to your accounts. <strong data-start=\"2066\" data-end=\"2119\">Do not call these numbers or reply to the sender.<\/strong> Legitimate organizations will not request sensitive information through calendar invites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\" data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2336\"><em><strong data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2227\">Important:<\/strong> If you were <strong data-start=\"2240\" data-end=\"2268\">not expecting the invite<\/strong>, do <strong data-start=\"2273\" data-end=\"2289\">not interact<\/strong> with it in any way\u2014ignore, delete, and report.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2508\"><strong data-start=\"2464\" data-end=\"2508\">4. Examples of Suspicious Event Subjects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2943\">\n<li data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2546\">\n<p data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2546\">\u201cInvoice #XXXX \u2013 Payment Overdue\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2590\">\n<p data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2590\">\u201cPayPal Notification \u2013 Action Required\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2640\">\n<p data-start=\"2593\" data-end=\"2640\">\u201cBTC Payment Received \u2013 Confirm Your Account\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2688\">\n<p data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2688\">\u201cCrypto Wallet Alert \u2013 Verify Your Account\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2689\" data-end=\"2735\">\n<p data-start=\"2691\" data-end=\"2735\">\u201cUnpaid Invoice \u2013 Urgent Payment Required\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2769\">\n<p data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2769\">\u201cBitcoin Transaction Pending\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2770\" data-end=\"2810\">\n<p data-start=\"2772\" data-end=\"2810\">\u201cPayment Request from [Random Name]\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2811\" data-end=\"2852\">\n<p data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2852\">\u201cRefund Confirmation \u2013 Action Needed\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"2899\">\n<p data-start=\"2855\" data-end=\"2899\">\u201cWire Transfer Details \u2013 Open Immediately\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"2943\">\n<p data-start=\"2902\" data-end=\"2943\">\u201cUrgent: Account Verification Required\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"3007\"><strong data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"3007\">5. Steps to Take if You Receive a Phishing Invite<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3347\">\n<li data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3069\">\n<p data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3069\"><strong data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3067\">Do not click <\/strong>on any links or respond \u201cYes\/No\/Maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3070\" data-end=\"3137\">\n<p data-start=\"3073\" data-end=\"3137\"><strong data-start=\"3073\" data-end=\"3135\">Do not <\/strong>contact the sender or call the phone number listed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3138\" data-end=\"3183\">\n<p data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3183\"><strong data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3161\">Delete the event<\/strong> from your calendar.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3184\" data-end=\"3270\">\n<p data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3213\"><strong data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3210\">Report it to Google<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3270\">\n<li data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3270\">\n<p data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3270\">Open the event \u2192 Click <strong data-start=\"3242\" data-end=\"3267\">More <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/phish-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/290\/2025\/10\/more-dots.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"22\" height=\"27\" \/> \u2192 Report as spam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3270\">This enables Google\u2019s machine learning to analyze data and improve responses in future scenarios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3271\" data-end=\"3347\">\n<p data-start=\"3274\" data-end=\"3347\"><strong data-start=\"3274\" data-end=\"3307\">Forward a copy to <a href=\"mailto:phishfiles@montclair.edu\">phishfiles@montclair.edu<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3354\" data-end=\"3378\"><strong data-start=\"3358\" data-end=\"3378\">6. Stay Vigilant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3738\">\n<li data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3443\">\n<p data-start=\"3381\" data-end=\"3443\">Never share your Google credentials or authentication codes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3444\" data-end=\"3505\">\n<p data-start=\"3446\" data-end=\"3505\">If you weren\u2019t expecting the invite, <strong data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3502\">do not interact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3506\" data-end=\"3621\">\n<p data-start=\"3508\" data-end=\"3621\">Verify directly with the sender through official channels if you\u2019re unsure (never through the calendar invite).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3622\" data-end=\"3738\">\n<p data-start=\"3624\" data-end=\"3738\">Share this information with classmates, colleagues, or team members to help protect the entire campus community.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3745\" data-end=\"3876\">By following these steps, you can <strong data-start=\"3779\" data-end=\"3833\">reduce exposure to calendar-based phishing attacks<\/strong> and keep your personal information safe.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional Notes:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you think you&#8217;ve fallen for a scam?
