  {"id":1284,"date":"2025-05-16T09:40:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T13:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/physics-astronomy\/?p=1284"},"modified":"2025-05-16T09:57:54","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T13:57:54","slug":"ai-innovation-and-faculty-mentorship-help-power-this-montclair-goldwater-scholars-scientific-ambitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/physics-astronomy\/2025\/05\/16\/ai-innovation-and-faculty-mentorship-help-power-this-montclair-goldwater-scholars-scientific-ambitions\/","title":{"rendered":"AI, Innovation and Faculty Mentorship Help Power this Montclair Goldwater Scholar\u2019s Scientific Ambitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph David Quinn-Vitabile came to ÌÇÐÄvlog expecting to study computer science.\u00a0Now a junior, he\u2019s expanded his academic ambitions to include astrophysics, where he\u2019s helping push the boundaries of how we understand the universe \u2013 work that recently earned him a prestigious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goldwaterscholarship.gov\/\">2025 Goldwater Scholarship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Initially drawn to Montclair for its affordability and proximity to his home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Quinn-Vitabile enrolled as a\u00a0<a href=\"\/academics\/computer-science\/\">Computer Science<\/a>\u00a0major. Like many Computer Science majors, he set about finding a software engineering internship, thinking that he might work at a tech company after graduation. Though he ended up getting that internship at Johnson &amp; Johnson last spring, he also happened to choose Physics for his elective science course that semester.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I really had a great time in physics. I thought that it was much more interesting than anything I had done yet in computer science. I wanted to continue studying physics, and I saw there was a lot of opportunity to use skills from computation and software to work in physics, whether research or other applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<footer><cite>Joseph David Quinn-Vitabile<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Quinn-Vitabile decided to add the minor in\u00a0<a href=\"\/academics\/physics\/\">Physics<\/a>\u00a0as it would only be a few extra classes. He could continue studying it, meet more people, and get involved in research.
