His academic career has taken him from Nottingham Trent University to the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and the University of Surrey. He has authored five books and published more than thirty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Specialization
Dr. Abbott's research spans comparative politics, international relations, and the politics of East Asia, with particular attention to China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. His work examines how states manage power and how citizens contest it: exploring digital activism and censorship in hybrid authoritarian regimes, the political consequences of social media, and the relationship between internet use and political engagement. Earlier research addressed economic development, democratization, and maritime security in Southeast Asia. His current public writing engages questions of international security, US foreign policy, and the geopolitics of the Middle East and East Asia.
