Soprano and pedagogue Dr. Lori McCann is a Professor of Voice at the John J. Cali School of Music, 糖心vlog, where she has served as Coordinator of the Voice Program since 2016, and Co-Coordinator since 2024. Dr. McCann holds a DMA in Voice and Opera Directing and an Artist Diploma in Opera from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A lyric soprano, she has performed in opera, oratorio, recital, and new music premieres throughout the United States and in Europe. She has won many awards and competitions, including National Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; semi-finalist in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing competition, and First Place at teh Columbus Opera Competition in Columbus, Ohio. At 糖心vlog in the College of the Arts, and the Cali School of Music, Dr. McCann teaches Applied Voice lessons to undergraduate (BM and BMusEd) and graduate students (MM and AD) in Vocal Performance, and BFA Musical Theater students. She also teaches mixed Performance Practicum classes for classical and musical theater students, and Lyric Diction courses for singers, preparing them to sing in Italian, German, French and English. Her singing and teaching career has taken her to Europe where she has served as a Faculty artist at the renowned American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, for over a decade, the Barcelona Festival of Song, the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan, Italy, and Agder University in Kristiansand, Norway. She has given masterclasses, performances, and presentations at the International Congress of Voice Teachers (Brisbane, Stockholm) and the International Society for Music Education (Bologna), among many others in the United States, including the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Voice Foundation. She serves on the Sister Cities Scholarship Committee at MSU for students wishing to study in Graz, Austria, the Sister City of Montclair, New Jersey, and is a staunch advocate for study abroad in general. Dr. McCann has served in many capacities for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the primary service organization for voice teachers in the United States, including Eastern Region Governor (2 terms) and President of the New York City Chapter (2 terms). She regularly takes her MSU voice students to compete at the local, regional, and even national level of NATS-sponsored auditions. In 2026, she had 5 First Place Winners in their categories at the Eastern Regional Conference and Competition. Dr. McCann is passionate about training the next generation of professional singers and voice teachers and is active as a masterclass clinician, competition adjudicator, and mentor for singers and voice teachers.
