What set this year’s showcase apart was the real-world impact of each project. Every team partnered with an external sponsor—ranging from tech startups to nonprofit organizations and industry leaders—to develop practical solutions to real challenges. From early idealization and prototyping to full-scale development and testing, students demonstrated both technical rigor and creative problem-solving.

Held this spring, the showcase featured 14 graduate student teams, each presenting the culmination of a year-long capstone project. These projects spanned a wide range of focus areas, including software development, computer science education, and data science, reflecting the breadth and depth of expertise within the SoC graduate programs. The graduate teams were enrolled on the and course sequence taught by Dr. Vaibhav Anu.

Given the explosion of opportunities in computing, technology and artificial intelligence, the new school is critical.

“As demand for computing jobs shows tremendous job growth, the establishment of the School of Computing comes at a pivotal time,” says Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Junius Gonzales. “Having a School allows for more synergies, formal collaboration and interdisciplinary opportunities for research.”

The school is housed in the recently renovated Center for Computing and Information Science building, where “vlog will continue to capitalize on the success of its math and computer science programs to help prepare students for this future job growth,” Gonzales says.

In addition to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all students from diverse backgrounds, Gonzales sees future collaborations with other disciplines across campus.
