Campus Traffic Hacks: What To Know /student-services/2025/08/29/campus-traffic-hacks-what-to-know/ /student-services/2025/08/29/campus-traffic-hacks-what-to-know/#respond Fri, 29 Aug 2025 18:53:36 +0000 /student-services/?p=217212 The first few weeks of school = packed lots and busy roads. Here’s how to make your commute smoother.

Did You Get Your Parking Permit?

You must have a parking permit to park anywhere on campus! Buy your permit online, register your car and check out the Montclair Campus Parking Map and the Bloomfield Campus Parking Map as well as regulations before you roll in.

Park Smarter!

  • PayByPhone: Not commuting every day? Use the to pay hourly in commuter lots or CarParc Diem. Easy, fast, no stress.
  • Lot 60 and 62 is King on the Montclair campus: Lot 60 may be far, but it fills slower and you should be able to find a spot! Park there and hop on the free campus shuttle to take you right up to main campus. Use the to track routes in real time!
  • Expect Delays: Give yourself extra time, especially the first month while everyone is getting back into the swing of things. Get here early and take advantage of any of the Commuter Pit Stops!
  • OpenSpace Parking Mobile App: Download today and see available spots to park on campus before you arrive! Download the app from the or the .

Drive Safely on Campus!

Be sure to follow all speed limits on campus and be mindful of pedestrians – they have the right away. When dropping off a passenger, pull into an adjacent parking lot or designated drop off areas along College Avenue that have curbing designed to pull in off the roadway, don’t clog the roads! And finally, for safety reasons, please remember that personal electric vehicles cannot be stored in University buildings. Learn More!

Mobile Camera Towers in Use for Traffic Study

In an effort to help identify traffic patterns and aid in the access and exits to and from campus, the University is deploying two mobile camera towers.

  • The two cameras will be located at the intersection of College Avenue and Carlisle Road and in Lot 8.
  • The limited traffic and transportation study will run through September with a focus on vehicular and pedestrian circulation patterns in these high-traffic areas.
  • Questions can be directed to the University Facilities service desk at 973-655-5444 or University Police at 973-655-5222.

Mass Transit!

Montclair is situated between two train stations and is served by multiple bus lines, making public transit an easy and environmentally-friendly choice.

All full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to receive a rail, bus or light rail monthly pass at 25% off of the regular monthly pass price, when you enroll online through NJ TRANSIT’s Quik-Tik program.
