  {"id":482,"date":"2019-07-03T16:06:35","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T20:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/teaching-and-learning\/?page_id=482"},"modified":"2023-12-20T10:28:32","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T15:28:32","slug":"for-children-and-families","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/teaching-and-learning\/services-offered\/for-children-and-families\/","title":{"rendered":"For Children and Families"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Supports and Interventions for Behavioral and Academic Concerns<\/h2>\n<p><strong>CEPS<\/strong>\u00a0provides assessment and intervention services for students that are at-risk for behavioral, social-emotional (mental health) and academic challenges or already receiving special education services. Within the behavioral ecological consultation model used by CEPS, the assessments are directly tied to and inform interventions for students and not for evaluative or diagnostic purposes*. These include:<\/p>\n<h2>Behavioral\/Mental Health Concerns<\/h2>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">For behavioral and mental health concerns, a\u00a0<strong>Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0is conducted in order to determine the function for the child\u2019s behavior. An FBA typically involves a record reviews, interviews, rating scales and direct observations to develop supports for students based on their strengths and needs. The interventions are selected based on assessment data and the evidence based literature to best meet the need of the students through skill development and creating nurturing environments. We provide direct and indirect support for implementing the interventions, including ongoing coaching, monitoring implementation fidelity and evaluating if it is successful (See service process for more details).<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/teaching-and-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2019\/07\/children.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/teaching-and-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2019\/07\/children.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of children yelling at each other.\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Academic Concerns<\/h2>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-fourth\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/teaching-and-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2019\/07\/stressed-child.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/teaching-and-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/123\/2019\/07\/stressed-child.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of child stressed while doing homework.\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column three-fourths\"><br \/>\nFor academics,\u00a0<strong>Curriculum Based Assessments (CBA)<\/strong>\u00a0are used across reading, math, writing, spelling and other academic skills. Curriculum based assessments in contrast to traditional assessments and evaluations, use a problem solving model to focus on what academic supports the child needs based on the child\u2019s mastery of the skill, rate of learning at the child\u2019s instructional level, and an understanding of the instructional environment in which learning occurs (typically classrooms). Like the FBA, CBA typically involves record reviews, interviews, rating scales and direct observations as well as the assessments for targeting relevant academic domains. Additional academic supports including developing study skills and becoming organized (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/teaching-and-learning\/clinic-for-evidence-based-practices-in-schools\/service-process-and-fees\/\">See service process page for more details<\/a>).\n<p>Students who experience behavior problems experience academic problems and vice versa. As a result, and depending on need, combined behavior and academic support are also provided.<\/p><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<p>*<em>The assessments mentioned above are different from psychological or psychoeducation evaluations, which are comprehensive assessments that typically inform diagnostic or classifications.
