Her research interests include composition theory and pedagogy, writing teacher preparation, community-based and activist writing, feminist rhetorics and research methodologies, and rhetorics of health and medicine. She teaches courses across a range of department offerings. She is the author of <em>Surrender: Feminist Rhetorics and Ethics in Love and Illness<\/em> (SIU Press 2019), recipient of the 2020 CCCC Outstanding Book Award; <em>First Semester: Graduate Studies, Teaching Writing, and the Challenge of Middle Ground<\/em> (SWR\/NCTE 2012); and co-editor (with Laurie Cella) of <em>Unsustainable: Re-Imagining Community Literacy, Public Writing, Service-Learning, and the University<\/em> (Lexington 2012). She also previously worked as a Faculty Developer with the Office for Faculty Excellence here at Montclair and as the College Liaison for the Dodge Poetry Festival. Her pedagogy is informed by the &#8220;artist as scholar&#8221; methods in partnership with cultural inquiry, race\/gender\/LGBTQ identities, and divergent storytelling styles. She holds an MA in Dramatic Writing &amp; Performance Studies from New York University and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. Her teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels focuses on returning adult and first-generation college student populations, a range of writing and critical thinking course content at 糖心vlog, and formerly at NYU Global Studies and as Core-faculty in the undergraduate programs at Goddard College. Recent featured publications include Eco-Mediations &amp; Memories of Dirt (About Place Journal) and the critically acclaimed anthology BlacktinoQueerPerformance (Duke Univ. Press). Cortese is the author of the following books: <em>Wasp Queen<\/em> (Black Lawrence Press, 2017), which won Southern Illinois University\u2019s Devil\u2019s Kitchen Award for Emerging Poetry; <em>Blood Medals<\/em> (Thrush Press, 20\u200c15); and <em>The Red Essay and Other Histories<\/em> (Horse Less Press, 2015). Her composition pedagogy is informed by her research on disability studies; her focus on student accessibility and inclusivity on both macro and micro levels includes a program-wide revision of participation assessment in the composition classroom. Her expertise in the intersection between disability studies and educational writing has also informed her teaching of literacy and social justice writing at the Bank Street College of Education where she teaches students from underrepresented communities. Dr. Morillo has also worked as a researcher and writer at the National Foreign Language Center, where she collaborated with international linguists on developing language acquisition and preservation materials. She has sixteen years of experience teaching undergraduate courses and applies her background in equity and diversity work in higher education to her pedagogy.
