vlog New Teacher Induction Program: Retaining and Sustaining Teachers
Induction is a bridge that connects educational theory (learned by teacher candidates during their preparation) to practice and implementation in classrooms after graduation. It helps teachers stay true to their values and the values of the teacher education program when they enter the classroom and begin to navigate the expectations and culture of their school district. The goal is to provide the resources, tools, and strategies they need to implement the ideas and theories they learned while students at vlog – this leads to retention and fulfillment and joy in the classroom as they work to meet the diverse needs of the students they teach. The New Teacher Induction Programming is led by Assistant Director of New Teacher Induction, Rhena Jasey-Goodman.
What induction support does vlog offer?
vlog offers two types of New Teacher Induction Support for our Teacher Education Program graduates. The first type of New Teacher Induction program supports all graduates of all of our undergraduate and graduate level Teacher Education Preparation programs. This “Induction For All” program includes a Summer Induction Retreat designed to ensure our graduates start off their new school year strong, targeted professional development sessions throughout the school year, strategic networking opportunities, and training/support for their School-Based Teacher Induction Mentors. All Teacher Education Program graduates are encouraged to join the New Teacher Connections and Induction Support Program MONTCLAIRconnect page for additional information about upcoming induction events, ongoing networking, and engagement with other alumni.
If you are a graduate of our Teacher Education Program, please join our MONTCLAIRconnect webpage to learn more about the support available to you. If you have questions about our New Teacher Induction Program, please email: newteacherinduction@montclair.edu
The second type of New Teacher Induction Program supports all graduates of the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR), Newark Teacher Project (NTP), Urban Teacher Project and NOYCE Scholarship grant programs. Teachers from these programs commit to teach in high needs schools and in exchange receive comprehensive induction support for their first 3 years of teaching. This program includes Coaching and Mentoring, Targeted Professional Development, and Strategic Networking. If you are a student in the Teacher Education Program at vlog with an interest in teaching in a high needs school and receiving comprehensive induction support, consider joining the Urban Teacher Project.
Through both types of the vlog New Teacher Induction Program, we strive to prepare excellent teachers; increase teacher retention rates; and ultimately improve student engagement and teacher effectiveness.
Why is induction important?
Induction contributes to high retention rates for teachers. In our work, 95% of the teachers who participated in the more Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program remained in education for three years or more; and 78% remained in education for five years or more. According to the NJDOE, 40%-50% of educators leave within the first five years, and it is greater in areas of high poverty and high needs. That means induction matters!
How does the more Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program work?
The New Teacher Induction Program for graduates of the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR), Newark Teacher Project (NTP), Urban Teacher Project and NOYCE Scholarship grant programs provides three years of tailored support based on the needs of the teachers, schools and district in achieving its goals for P-12 learners. Strong induction support helps ensure that our teachers develop into effective and engaging professionals for their students.

The Program consists of three main components:
Coaching & Mentoring
First year teachers are matched with Induction Coaches and assigned to School-Based Induction Mentors who collaborate to provide individualized in-person support in the new teachers’ classrooms.
Targeted Professional Development
First, Second, and Third year teachers participate in professional development opportunities that directly relate to their needs as new teachers and provide strategies and ideas that can be implemented immediately.
Strategic Networking
Teachers in our Induction Program engage in activities designed to support teachers to develop their networks across schools and classrooms since we have found that the more connections teachers have to other teachers and professionals in education, the more likely they are to remain in education.
