Rhythm Nation celebrates American rhythmic traditions as an expression of bodily autonomy and tacit history keeping. From the jagged grooves of Daniel Bernard Roumain鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;String Quartet No.1: X (an homage to Malcolm X), to the otherworldly textures of Sun Ra鈥檚 鈥淚nterstellar Low Ways,鈥 to the lyricism of Duke Ellington鈥檚 鈥淐ome Sunday,鈥 this wide-ranging exploration will also feature movements from Fod茅 Lassana Diabate鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;Sunjata鈥檚 Time. Each of the pieces on the program evokes a distinct rhythmic world, reflecting the plurality of American movement(s) and protecting the unspoken spirit of their lineage鈥檚 narratives.

Applauded by The Washington Post as 鈥渁 perfect encapsulation of today鈥檚 trends in chamber music,鈥 and by The New Yorker as 鈥渋ndependent-minded,鈥 multi-Grammy-nominated PUBLIQuartet is an improvising string quartet whose repertoire blends genres and highlights American multiculturalism. Hailed for their 鈥渕agnetic momentum and energy鈥 (Feast of Music) 鈥渢hrilling immediacy鈥 of their 鈥渂oldly imaginative鈥 playing (BBC Music Magazine), PubliQuartet 鈥渂rings both technical mastery and freewheeling joy to their music playing鈥 (Feast of Music). The quartet comprises Curtis Stewart and Jannina Norpoth, violin; Nick Revel, viola and Hamilton Berry, cello.
