Biography

Dr. Fan-Yin Cheng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at ÌÇÐÄvlog, where she leads the Brain & Ear Auditory Neuroscience (BEAN) Lab. She earned her Ph.D. in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin in 2022, under the guidance of Dr. Craig Champlin and Dr. Spencer Smith.

Dr. Cheng’s research investigates how the auditory system represents speech and how sensory and cognitive processes interact to support communication in real-world listening environments. Using behavioral and non-invasive electrophysiological approaches, her work examines speech encoding across brainstem and cortical levels and how these processes contribute to individual differences in speech perception.

Research in the BEAN Lab focuses on neural mechanisms of speech encoding, speech processing in complex listening environments, and objective neural biomarkers for clinically relevant listening challenges. This work supports long-term applications in clinical audiology, including future assessment approaches for cochlear implant (CI) users and individuals with auditory processing difficulties.
