Biography

John Soboslai is an associate professor, arriving at Montclair State in 2016. He is scholar of martyrdom and religous violence across time and tradition, publishing with Cambridge University Press in 2024. He also leads the project which creates extended reality experiences of religious practices in partnership with localized communities. At Montclair, he teaches courses in understanding religion, international studies, religious violence, global religious politics and death, dying and the afterlife, as well as serving as the founding Co-Director of the Humanities+ Lab. 

He holds a BA in philosophy from Central Connecticut State University, a MA in history of religions from Columbia University, and a PhD in the Anthropology and Sociology of Religion with a Global Studies emphasis from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
